Position Summary
The seasonal gardener will assist New York Restoration Project ground crews maintain Swindler Cove Park, Sherman Creek waterfront and the Esplanade along the Harlem River Drive. Swindler Cove Park is a NYC gated public park managed by NYRP, open from the hours of 8am to 8pm 7 days per week. These sites are heavily-used recreation areas; strong communication skills are beneficial to maintain park rules in a positive manner with the public, spanish language is a plus. Candidates must be available to work on weekends and have flexibility to work until 8pm. Schedule will provide for two consecutive weekdays off per week.
Major Responsibilities
- Assist with maintenance of the park site, which includes but is not limited to: litter removal, planting, weeding, plant maintenance, watering and cleaning of the park public bathroom
- Assist with lawn and tree maintenance on the esplanade including mowing, weeding and litter removal
- Utilize methods consistent with NYRP standards and techniques for planting, nurturing and maintaining plant materials
- Assist with the supervision of large groups of volunteers working on greening & maintenance projects
- Maintain and operate tools and equipment used in landscape and horticultural work, insuring safe practices at all times
- Other duties as assigned
Required Experience
- Possession of a high-school diploma or equivalent
- Gardening or groundskeeping experience
- Ability to lift 50lbs, this is a physically demanding job
- Tolerance to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Ability to use groundskeeping tools, mower experience is a plus
- Strong communication skills

Position Summary
The New York Restoration Project’s MillionTreesNYC Forester will be responsible for assisting with the planning, planting, and maintenance of trees located on public parkland, city streets, public housing campuses, schoolyards and playgrounds, community gardens and other publicly-used properties throughout New York City’s five boroughs. The position requires the application of the latest urban forestry principles, practices and related safety techniques in an outdoor environment.

Major Responsibilities
- Facilitate the MillionTreesNYC tree planting and maintenance strategy – with NYRP’s focus on institutional properties (New York City Housing Authority developments, schoolyards, playgrounds, community centers, and other public lands).
- Identify and survey appropriate sites for tree planting, perform walk-through’s with landowners and provide them astute forestry advice.
- Develop and/or review tree planting site plans.
- Oversee contractor and volunteer tree planting activities.
- Research, promote, and implement proper tree planting, tree health, and maintenance guidelines.
- Attend urban forestry-related seminars and events, develop industry contacts, and contribute to the forestry-edification of NYRP staff.

The Historic House Trust of New York City, Inc. (the Trust) was founded in 1989 as a private partner to the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation (Parks) for the preservation and promotion of 15 historic sites owned by New York City and located in public parks. Today, the Trust works with Parks and the nonprofit boards that operate each house to restore, interpret, and promote a growing collection of 22 sites. Services offered by the Trust include consultation on restoration, curatorial and education projects, maintenance services, and assistance with fundraising, promotion and the development of the nonprofit organizations that operate the sites.
The Trust raises over $1.5 M annually in private dollars for operating, restoration and program expenses to support these efforts and approximately $5 M in public dollars for capital restoration projects.
Ranging from modest farmers' cottages to grand mansions, the sites in the Trust's collection chronicle a wide range of cultural, historical, and architectural aspects of New York City life. Collectively, the sites, which reside in parks across the five boroughs, tell the story
of New York City's evolution.
This position reports directly to both the Board of Directors of the Trust and the Parks Department.
Primary Responsibilities
- Serve as Executive Director of the Trust, managing all aspects of a nonprofit organization with responsibility for all fundraising activities including traditional foundation, corporate and individual giving programs; endowment campaign; cultivation events; board development activities (60+ individuals); and implementation of long-range strategic plan.
- As Director of Historic Houses for Parks, serve as senior advisor for preservation projects on NYC parkland. Work closely and in collaboration with historic preservation staff at Parks' capital division.
- Supervise team of technical experts who oversee portfolio of projects in conservation, collections management, education and interpretation, and property management.
- Serve as principal liaison to directors and individual nonprofit licensees that program and operate 22 individual historic sites. Foster positive working relationships amongst all parties. Develop and expand technical resources and portfolio of professional development opportunities available to sites.
- Oversee all private and publicly funded capital restoration projects on buildings and grounds. Work closely with individual sites and Parks staff to attract funding from New York City and State elected officials for both capital and expense program. Act as liaison to Parks' capital division.
- Serve as principal liaison to various city and state agencies including NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, Landmarks Preservation Commission and NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation for all projects and activities that take place on Trust properties.
- Expand existing marketing campaign, capitalizing on the Trust's 20th anniversary. Work closely with outside consultant to develop menu of promotional opportunities for sponsors and members including a variety of public special events and donor cultivation events.
Salary Range
$85,000 to $110,000 commensurate with experience
Qualifications
A Bachelor's and Master's degree and/or extensive executive level experience in a nonprofit organization. Proven leadership skills, fundraising experience, and ability to manage and motivate staff required. Prior experience working with NYC government, interest in NYC history, architecture and/or preservation preferred. Valid driver's license required.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Under the direction of the NYRP Vice President for Horticulture and Construction and the NYRP Forestry Manager, manage multiple tree planting projects (up to 40 projects per planting season) at New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) campuses, public schoolyards, playgrounds and other publicly-accessible properties.
- In collaboration with NYRP Forestry manager, develop, review and implement landscape design and tree planting plans for each site, as well as a watering and maintenance strategy.
- For each project site oversee the coordination of project planning, property demolition and excavation, tree procurement and planting, landscaping, and care and maintenance.
- In coordination with NYRP departments and staff, integrate community outreach, education and marketing activities into each tree planting project.
- Serve as lead NYRP liaison with NYCHA, NYC Department of Education and other landowners and managers responsible for properties where NYRP is planting trees.
- Manage day-to-day relationships with landscape designers, nurseries, construction companies and other third-party contractors.
- Assess work performed by contractors including post-planting field inspections.
- Promote and implement proper tree planting, tree health and tree maintenance practices.
- Assist with the planning and implementation of NYRP corporate and community volunteer tree planting days and homeowner tree giveaway program.
- Catalog tree planting by NYRP and its partners.
- Prepare reports, budgets, strategic plans and correspondence to support tree planting activities.
- Represent MillionTreesNYC efforts at public and community meetings, conferences and events.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Participate in and offer to staff appropriate training opportunities.
- Develop and monitor the annual plan and operating budget for the park management and operations department.
- Through an understanding of how development and park management and operations are integrally connected, participate and support the Conservancy’s private and governmental fundraising initiatives.
- Communicate, recruit, inspire and work side by side with volunteers, non-union paid staff, union employees, as well as Conservancy donors and trustees in order to accomplish goals and objectives.

Various school groups use the garden on their own time but sometimes we schedule a garden tour/class with students. It would be nice if you would be at the garden for a few hours on the weekend and the kids could stop by to explore it.
I'm looking for someone who will treat this garden as their own. You will be the only gardener and solely responsible.
The garden has a very small budget from a grant which can be used to buy mulch, plants, etc.

Position Summary: The Northwest Service Academy member will have the opportunity to develop a new Community Garden Project to be shared by the City of Wilsonville (City) and Wilsonville Community Sharing and Food Bank. (WCS) The objectives are to provide better nutrition and enhance a sense of self esteem and self determination among WCS program participants, create an integrated community garden community, educate both garden participants and volunteers and raise awareness of the values of community gardening. In the general community, begin to involve children and youth in gardening activities, and eventually to provide an income opportunity through creation of a Farmer’s Market.
General Responsibilities (to include, but not limited to):
- Create a pool of committed volunteers
- Identify interested gardening participants
- Organize a community garden program around the tenets of food self-sufficiency.
- Involve potential program participants in creating the garden program.
- Provide education to prospective gardeners in garden techniques, food storage, preparation and preservation.

Greenwood Gardens is seeking a horticulture intern for the 2008 season.
Greenwood Gardens is a 28 acre public garden in Short Hills, New Jersey, approximately 22 miles southwest of Manhattan. It became a nonprofit in 2003 after 100 years as a private estate, and is nationally significant for its natural beauty, history and design. Greenwood is a layered landscape with formal terraces, allees, a rustic garden of the Arts and Crafts period, a meadow, ponds, farm fields and barns; the site’s sweeping vistas have been preserved and are extended on all sides by dedicated parkland. These historic gardens and structures are undergoing restoration and diligent work is revitalizing this unique landscape so that it may be enjoyed more fully by the public.
