    Full-time Seasonal Gardener

Harlem Horticulture is seeking a full time, seasonal, gardener to essentially be the right hand to a growing garden design, installation, and maintenance company.

Harlem Horticulture was founded in 2017 and has grown considerably over the past two years. We have clients all over the greater New York City area, and while the majority of clients reside in Manhattan - we have a number of clients in Fairfield & Westchester county, as well as Long Island. On days that we travel outside the city we drive so you need not worry about transportation. Our gardens are quite diverse so you will have the opportunity to work with a great variety of plant material, and in many different settings.

We are looking for not just a gardener, but a team member to help with any and all aspects of the day to day operations.

    Primary Responsibilities:

Everything and anything related to installing and maintaining new and existing gardens. We do a lot of planting, so be prepared for that. On days we do work in Manhattan, we spend at least 25-33% of the time unloading plants/materials, transporting them to the garden, and cleaning up. Such is the nature of working in a city. And of course standard horticulture responsibilities such as mulching, weeding, pruning, fertilizing, etc..

Outside of that it’s just helping in any capacity that you can to make things easier, more efficient, and fun.

    Qualifications:

Ideally someone who has some knowledge and experience with horticulture. This means being well versed in planting a variety of plant material: from mature trees, to annuals / perennials; and in a variety of different settings: from containers with potting soil to large estates with varying soil profiles. Big plus if you are familiar and knowledgeable of plant names (Latin) and their growth requirements.

While the above mentioned knowledge would be very helpful, I am wiling to overlook these requirements if you bring an enthusiastic, and genuine, interest in learning and expanding your understanding of horticulture. We are happy to teach and train someone so long as they bring a sincere energy and desire to learn. While the days can be long we try our best to have fun and ultimately just make our clients happy.

Someone who is handy and has experience with carpentry / tools would be very helpful.

*Must have a valid drivers license

*MUST BE PUNCTUAL AND RELIABLE. This is of upmost importance. Our schedule gets very busy very quickly and we must be able to rely on you. Not having help even one day can throw off an entire week of planning and scheduling.

    Compensation:

$25.00 / hour. We pay overtime ($37.50 / hour) for any week you work over 40 hours. If you bring significant skills or experience, we are willing to offer a higher pay rate.

    Start date:

End of March, but depends heavily on when spring weather arrives. Season begins to wind down in November and we finish by Thanksgiving.

    To apply:

Please send a resume and an informal cover letter to jared@harlemhorticulture.com.

For your cover letter, I am mainly interested in learning about your experience and interest in horticulture, as well as a little bit about you and your personality.

    Seasonal Gardener

Hudson River Park, the longest waterfront park in the United States, has transformed four miles of decaying piers and parking lots along Manhattan’s West side into a beloved, urban recreational paradise. Attracting 17 million visits each year, the Park offers a myriad of recreational and educational activities for local residents and visitors alike, and plays a critical role in protecting the Hudson River environment itself.

In its brief history, Hudson River Park has also served as an important catalyst for economic development and job creation. Over the past decade, it has attracted $3 billion in new construction at 94 new buildings in adjacent neighborhoods. The inspiration for numerous waterfront parks, city- and nation-wide, Hudson River Park represents the next great era in the history of urban parks—the birth of the waterfront park.

The Hudson River Park Trust was created by State legislation to serve as a unique city-state entity overseeing the design, construction and operation of Park. The Trust does not receive any public operating monies, relying instead on income generated within the Park as well as private support for 100% of its annual operating budget.

In order to ensure the future success and ongoing sustainability of the Park, the Hudson River Park Trust works alongside Friends of Hudson River Park, which serves as its primary advocacy, support, and fundraising partner.

In 1999, the Trust began the massive effort to begin repairing and rebuilding the Park in sections. Different architectural teams work on each section to provide design experiences that enhance the unique and vibrant neighborhoods bordering the park – all the while maintaining the feeling of a unified whole.

Today, people visit Hudson River Park to cycle the busiest bikeway in America, to sunbathe on green beaches, and to connect with the river. More than 135,000 people enjoyed free concerts, movies and dances here last summer. Over 400,000 people of all ages play on the Park’s beloved athletic fields and courts. And 7,500 children participate in free educational programming each year.

Hudson River Park is deeply loved and appreciated by New Yorkers not only for the magnificent open space it provides, but also because it serves so many needs.

    Glasshouse Facility Specialist

ABOUT THE NEW YORK BOTANICAL GARDEN

The New York Botanical Garden is an iconic living museum. An oasis in this busy metropolis since its founding in 1891, the Garden is a dynamic, leading New York City cultural institution with an annual operating budget of over $80 million. A National Historic Landmark, the 250-acre site’s verdant landscape supports over one million living plants in extensive collections. More than one million annual visitors enjoy the Garden, not only for its remarkable diversity of tropical, temperate, and desert flora but also for programming that ranges from renowned exhibitions in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory and LuEsther T. Mertz Library to celebrations on Daffodil Hill.

The Garden is also a major educational institution. More than 300,000 people annually— among them Bronx families, schoolchildren, and teachers—learn about plant science, ecology, and healthful eating through NYBG’s hands-on, curriculum-based programming.

In addition, NYBG operates one of the world’s largest plant research and conservation programs, with nearly 100 Ph.D. scientists—working in the Garden’s state-of- the-art molecular labs as well as in the field, where they lead programs in 49 countries.

    GLASSHOUSES

The Garden manages two primary glasshouses and several smaller growing facilities to support of its mission as a museum of plants. Collectively, these facilities encompass nearly two-and-a-half acres of growing space.

Designed by the Lord and Burnham firm and completed in 1902, it is a New York City landmark and America’s pre-eminent Victorian-era conservatory. It is heated by a pair of dual fuel steam boilers and cooled by a combination of vents, fans, and misting systems. Shading is applied externally in spring and removed in fall. Heating and cooling are controlled by a Priva climate control system.

The Nolen Greenhouses for Living Collections are the Garden’s primary plant production facility. Completed in 2005, they cover approximately one acre and include eight growing zones divided into two blocks of four, a headhouse, offices, and a boiler room. The Nolen Greenhouses incorporate several modern glasshouse technologies including open roof venting, radiant floor heating, and a fertigation system. They are heated by dual fuel hot water boilers and cooled by roof vents, fans, fog systems, and evaporative coolers. Head Gardener/Professional Horticulturist

Foras Studio is a small landscape design firm based in Brooklyn, New York. We are seeking an energetic, responsible and experienced Horticulturist to maintain 30-40 mainly residential gardens.

In this new position you would provide courteous and professional regularly scheduled horticultural care for gardens designed and installed by Foras Studio. You would maintain your own schedule in close consultation with the partners, and travel between clients at your discretion when working alone.

Each maintenance visit would involve regular garden tasks such as dead-heading, staking, training, checking irrigation, and leaving each garden tidy and inviting. Seasonal chores may include hedging, mulching, composting, fertilizing, wrapping evergreen shrubs, etc. Large tools and required resources are provided on site.

A thorough assessment of plant health would be performed during each visit, including: evaluating soil moisture and basic fertility, identifying pest and disease outbreaks, appraising formative pruning needs, etc. Resultant tasks would be coordinated in consultation with the partners.

A maintenance database would be updated regularly recording your actions, observations, recommendations, etc.

We are a small firm and do much of our own schlepping so it is necessary that candidates be able to lift 50lbs and perform other rigorous garden chores. In addition to the above, your assistance may be requested for garden installations as the maintenance schedule permits.

    Seasonal Fine Gardeners

If you are passionate about plants and want to expand your repertoire, consider joining our team in caring for a stunning, 1903 Olmsted-designed private estate on Boston’s North Shore. With seven acres of plantings you will have the rare opportunity to work with a diverse and sophisticated plant palette ranging from seaside to woodland. There are extensive formal perennial borders, a water garden, a rose garden, a vegetable and cutting garden, native woodland gardens, and many shrub borders — all meticulously maintained using ecologically sound methods.

Enjoy a tremendous opportunity for professional growth as you work with our expert staff, brainstorm plants, and refine your gardening skills. (In our windy oceanfront location, everything from Ammi to ornamental grasses is pea-brushed or staked. Learning how to do it in a way that is both gracefully natural and hurricane-proof is one of the greatest challenges, but also one of the most rewarding.) While we work at a productive pace, we take the time to do things right. Best practices and techniques are used, exchanged, and taught.

This coming season we are looking for two outstanding gardeners: vibrant individuals with a discerning eye, dedication to detail, and strong work ethic.

    We require:

    • Strong horticultural knowledge, including familiarity with botanical names. A degree or certificate in horticulture or a related field is preferred.
    • The ability to work independently or with a team, with a shared commitment to orderliness and cleanliness.
    • A minimum of one full season of comparable experience — so you know that weeding, watering, and working outside in all weather conditions are all part of the job. (Happily, lawn mowing and irrigation are not.)

These are seasonal, full-time, hands-on positions. Hourly compensation is extremely generous, and there is the potential for an especially strong performer to assume a year-round position.

The estate is a beautiful and rewarding environment in which to work, with involved and appreciative owners. A person dedicated to working to the highest standards will take satisfaction from being part of a hard-working (but fun-loving) team that understands and values people with a similar sense of aesthetics.
