The seven-acre Wilderness Garden features mature trees, flowering shrubs, and carriage trails, accented by statuary and a fountain.

Job Description

The Horticulture Intern is responsible for working with the garden and grounds staff across the Wethersfield Estate. This may include propagation, planting and transplanting, mulching, weeding, watering, fertilizing, grooming, dead-heading, pruning, leaf removal, mowing, string trimming and other chores as needed.

Mid-May - Mid-October (negotiable based on availability)

Job Requirements

The position requires an ability to communicate effectively with Wethersfield staff; to follow instructions; to work well with other staff members, and to operate hand-tools and power equipment safely. Applicant must have a strong desire to learn and to actively participate as a member of the Wethersfield team.

Qualifications

Experience in the areas outlined for this position are helpful but not required. The individual’s motivation and level of accountability for a job well done will be given strong consideration.

Supervision

The position is directly supervised by the Head Gardener and the Assistant Gardener, and will be required to abide by the policies and procedures of Wethersfield Estate.

Work Schedule

The work schedule is a 40-hour work week, generally 7:30-4:30 daily with a one-hour lunch and two breaks. Some weekend days may be required.

Salary and Benefits

This is a paid, temporary, seasonal position. The pay rate is $11.10/hour. No other benefits are available.

  • A certificate from a recognized horticultural or botanical program and one year of full-time gardening work experience as described above.

About The Crane Estate at Castle Hill

Castle Hill is one of the nation’s best surviving Country Place Era estates, the summer home of Richard T. Crane Jr. and his family, constructed between 1909 and 1927. The property’s complex blending of buildings, formal landscaping, recreational and entertainment spaces, farm and greenhouse is the work of seven nationally-known architects, landscape architects and gardeners and is surrounded by magnificent natural scenery. Mrs. Crane bequeathed her estate to The Trustees in 1949. Today, Castle Hill is one of 11 Trustees Public Gardens. In 2019, the organization will continue its garden revitalization initiatives with the rejuvenation of the Rose Garden. Constructed in 1913-14, this iconic ruin will be stabilized and enhanced with new pergola and revitalized fountain set amidst the stabilized ruins of the former garden. Seasonal plantings will enliven and invigorate this favored romantic spot.

Summary of Position

Under the leadership of the Horticulturist for Castle Hill, the Estate Gardener will bring hands-on technical skills and support to the Castle Hill gardens with special focus to the Rose Garden, Formal Garden, and the vista from the main house terrace to the mouth of the Ipswich River. This individual will support the long-range strategy for the appropriate care of the landscape and gardens, implement best horticultural practices, lead interns, volunteers and seasonal employees in exceptional standards of garden maintenance, and interact with visitors, members, and donors in an open, engaging manner. This energetic, positive individual will bring their professional gardening talent to the appropriate care of the gardens, assist with living collections management, and implement best stewardship practices established under the leadership of the Castle Hill Horticulturist. This is a year, round 29 hour/week position.

Essential Functions

  • Performs all duties associated with installation, maintenance and care of permanent and seasonal plantings, including formal gardens, hedges, shrub borders, natural areas and lawn with special focus on the rejuvenation of the Rose Garden.
  • Guides the horticultural stewardship of the garden under the supervision of the Castle Hill Horticulturist.
  • Collaborates with engagement staff, stewardship staff, management, and consultants on the execution of garden rejuvenation, care of post mature and new plantings, and engagement program content.
  • Positively motivates and assists with the leadership of seasonal staff, volunteers and interns in the maintenance, installation and care of plant collections with careful attention to planting plans, record keeping, and proper plant identification.
  • Assists with the care and growth of the garden
  • Abides by the policies and best practices to guide great garden design and exceptional horticultural standards in balance with their natural surroundings and historic integrity.

About Brooklyn Greenway Initiative

Brooklyn Greenway Initiative (BGI) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization committed to the development, establishment and long-term stewardship of the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway – a 26-mile protected and landscaped pedestrian and cyclist route that, when complete, will connect Brooklyn’s storied and iconic waterfront, parks and open space, commercial and cultural corridors, and new tech and innovation hubs for 2.65 million Brooklyn residents, over 1.1 million employees in Brooklyn, and 15 million annual visitors from across the City and around the world. Since its founding in 2004, BGI has channeled more than $218 million in public and private investment toward implementation of the Greenway, leveraged public and private investment of $2.38 million toward the creation of the Naval Cemetery Landscape as a new park-like space adjacent to the Greenway, and conceptualized or supported the development of other open spaces and public amenities along the Greenway. Approximately 18 miles of completed Greenway are currently in use, four segments are currently in construction, and two additional segments will break ground later in 2019 to be completed in 2021, leaving only a few remaining gaps to be connected.

Position Description

The Coordinator will report directly to the Executive Director and collaborate with other team members (Staff and Board) focused on marketing, communications, public outreach, and external affairs. Specifically, the Communications Coordinator is responsible for 3 primary areas of work:

Content Creation and Messaging

  • Write and create content for diverse audiences for delivery via multiple print and digital platforms
  • Develop photographic, video, and other media assets to effectively tell the story of BGI and the Greenway to the broadest audience
  • Write press releases, story pitches, and other materials to garner earned media
  • Support building an annual Communications Plan to guide messaging and outreach opportunities throughout each year

Content Production and Marketing

  • Coordinate and effectuate the production of new media tools and dissemination of content using various BGI owned and external communications tools, including the BGI Website, eNewsletter, annual report, social media, event/program listing sites, press/publications, and other platforms
  • Develop presentations and other materials for a variety of meetings, events, and campaigns
  • Coordinate relationships with external graphic designers, printers, press, and other partners
  • Contribute to shaping a consistent visual brand and communications style for BGI
  • Help identify new resources and develop new relationships that will support BGI’s desired expansion of reach and engagement with our audiences

External Relations

  • Develop and cultivate relationships with press, external partners, and peers in related organizations, acting as a representative of BGI to external contacts in meetings, events, and other engagements
  • Maintain a directory of press, production and media partners, content creators and others
  • Support correspondence with external relations

Riverside Park Conservancy is looking for full-time Gardeners to work year-round.

About Us

Riverside Park and the adjacent Riverside Park South, West Harlem Piers Park, and Fort Washington Park contain numerous entrance gardens, woodlands, scenic promenades, ballfields, cafes, and access to six miles of Hudson River waterfront. Riverside Park, one of New York City’s premier waterfront parks, is a Scenic Landmark originally designed by Frederick Law Olmsted.

The Riverside Park Conservancy works in partnership with the City of New York to help restore and maintain the park’s natural areas and gardens by providing full time paid field staff, equipment, and supplies. Since its founding Riverside Park Conservancy has had one of New York City’s largest Park volunteer programs.

Major Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Grassroots Volunteer Program. Plan and carry out logistics.
  • Lead groups of volunteers. Be comfortable talking in front of a group and giving clear direction; instruct volunteers in proper techniques, a successful project outcome, and the care and use of tools.
  • Work closely with and support individual volunteers in the care of their assigned areas, responding to requests for materials and other needs. Coordinate with volunteer department.
  • Maintain and advance horticultural and restoration areas, according to Parks Department standards and Conservancy priorities.
  • Create and carry out work plans independently. Identify plants and their maintenance needs: in particular native woodland plant species.
  • Must have strong time management and communication skills.
  • Care for assigned gardens and landscape areas, adhering to and sustaining approved planting plans on appropriate seasonal schedule.
  • As required, keep simple records and prepare written reports. May supervise other staff as directed.

Qualifications

  • Experience/Education: Two years full time experience in horticultural work, including planting and caring for plants, shrubs, trees, and lawns, and general grounds keeping as described above; 30 credits, at least 15 of them in horticulture or a related field, from an accredited college or community college, or education and/or experience equivalent. Familiarity working in a public and outdoor space. Additional areas of specialization such as native plants, restoration experience, education or supervisory experience and herbicide license considered a plus.
  • Communication Skills: Must have a professional and positive demeanor and work well with the public and large groups of volunteers. Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.

Employees in this position perform a wide variety of horticultural maintenance tasks throughout the horticultural sites and parklands operated by the Morris County Park Commission. Summary of Position:

The Horticulture Assistant is a unique position combining both horticultural skills and people skills. The Horticulture Assistant reports to the Horticulturist at Naumkeag in Stockbridge, MA. This is a full-time 9-month position and includes at least one weekend day. The Horticulture Assistant helps maintain all beds and plants at Naumkeag, with a focus on the cut-flower farm. Essential Functions:

  • Assists the Horticulturist in the planting and maintenance of the designed landscape and living collections at Naumkeag
  • Leads the planning, planting, maintenance, and harvesting of Naumkeag’s cut flower operation; tasks include but are not limited to fertilization, weeding, dead-heading, irrigation, and related upkeep
  • Responsible for planning, bed prep, planting, maintenance, and harvesting of ½ acre pumpkin patch
  • Responsible for task assignment and supervision of interns, volunteers, and contractors as directed by the Horticulturist

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Must be able to identify and communicate issues with equipment, supplies, pests and diseases to Horticulturist and other site staff
  • Demonstrated knowledge in the identification and care of popular herbaceous flower crops
  • Familiarity with general landscape maintenance practices, including the use of applicable hand tools and small power equipment
  • Willingness to interact with garden visitors and provide relevant horticultural information and assistance
  • Ability to deliver a greenhouse and garden crop on time and on budget

Plant Records Assistant (Part-time, Seasonal)

Position Charter:

Under the supervision of the Plant Records Curator Specialist, the Plant Records Assistant will develop skills relevant to a career in plant collections and professional horticulture. This position includes the opportunity to learn plant collections management utilizing IrisBG desktop and mobile software as well as labeling, verifying, and mapping the collections at the arboreta. Interns will also assist with nursery management, plant propagation, and seed collection activities.

Essential Functions:

  • Collect GPS field data of woody and herbaceous plant material using mobile mapping technology to assist with mapping projects including but not limited to the Willowwood Arboretum, the Bamboo Brook Outdoor Education Center and the Frelinghuysen Arboretum.
  • Conduct field inventory surveys and determine needs for plant labeling, taxonomic verifications, and maintenance activities.
  • Accession, de-accession, and update plant records using IrisBG recordkeeping software.
  • Perform collections assessments and prepare reports on plants of interest.
  • Create plant labels for the plant collections using an engraver, embosser, and laser printer.
  • Assist with seed collection, cleaning, counting, inventory, propagation, sale, and Index Seminum seed exchange.

Other Functions:

  • Assist with nursery management activities including watering, weeding, and pruning plant material. Unloading or loading plant material to and from the nursery.

FT Horticultural Assistant (Seasonal)

Foras Studio is a small landscape design firm based in Brooklyn, New York. We are seeking an experienced and energetic gardener to use best horticultural practices to help maintain 20-25 gardens per week, with some occasional installation work.

Each maintenance visit will involve regular and seasonal garden chores. All candidates should have a minimum of two-years experience with: pruning perennials, trees and shrubs, staking, training vines, monitoring soil moisture, pest management, hedge-shearing, divisions, planting, and restorative pruning.

A thorough assessment of plant health is an essential part of our services and will be performed during each visit. We strive to keep ahead of problems by regularly evaluating soil moisture and basic fertility, identifying pest and disease outbreaks, and performing regular formative pruning. Special treatments may involve application of horticultural oil or release of nematodes and other beneficial insects.

Environmental Educator and Intern Program Coordinator

Solar One, a nonprofit leader in New York City on the cutting edge of sustainability programming, is seeking a per-diem environmental educator to deliver programming for students and volunteers as part of our Stuyvesant Cove Park Permaculture Parks program.

Planted with native plants and organically managed as a productive engineered wilderness, our 2 acre waterfront permaculture gardens serve as a living symbol of the potential for urban ecological restoration and renewal. Stuy Cove Park is an all-native plant food forest, and the only NYC park that encourages foraging of wild foods. We also have a permaculture plant nursery, hold wild foods events, and sell small quantities of wild edibles to restaurants.

Since 2004, Solar One’s dedicated park staff have educated urban residents about the complex interdependencies of native plants, wildlife, and people through children’s programs, park tours, field trips, volunteer days, professional development workshops, and other interactive opportunities.

Overview of Position:

Solar One is seeking an environmental educator and intern program coordinator who is available to deliver on-site programs for in Manhattan on a part-time/as-needed basis from May 2019 - September 2019. Additionally, the educator will work with interns, community members, and volunteer groups to accomplish park garden and maintenance tasks. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Deliver high quality and rigorous on-site programs to K-12 NYC school students during the school year and camp groups in the summer. Educators are responsible for all lesson materials prep and delivery.

  • Knowledge and/or interest, and capacity to teach in areas of art practice, urban agriculture, permaculture, restoration agriculture, agroecology, soil science, restoration ecology, horticulture, climate change, food systems, environmental justice, indigenous peoples history and culture, and urban planning;
  • The ideal candidate will have a strong background in garden-based instruction, outdoor education, and youth development.
  • Experience in classroom/group management skills; demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations including youth and adults; adept at handling groups outdoors.
  • Agricultural/gardening/horticultural experience a plus.

Foras Studio is a small landscape design firm based in Brooklyn, New York. We are seeking an experienced and energetic Horticulturist to be responsible for maintaining 20-25 gardens and terraces each week, with some occasional installation work.

You will provide courteous and professional regularly scheduled horticultural care for gardens designed and installed by Foras Studio. You will maintain your own schedule in close consultation with the partners, and travel between clients at your discretion when working alone.

2019 Summer Internship Program

PROGRAM SUMMARY

The Central Park Conservancy College Summer Internship program provides college students with paid full-time positions for 10 weeks from June to August. Participants receive the opportunity to contribute directly to the management and care of Central Park and learn about the complexity of managing an iconic and historic urban park that receives over 42 million visits a year. Working with Conservancy staff, interns provide critical support throughout the summer, while developing skills on-the-job and gaining practical experience for their careers. College interns support areas of the Conservancy’s work, such as: Visitor Services and Public Programs, GIS & Asset Management, Information Technology, Special Events and Fundraising, Communications, Horticulture, Landscape Architecture, Tree Care, and Woodlands Management.

Housing and transportation are the responsibility of each individual intern. Attire for interns working in the office setting is business casual. Interns working in Park Operations will receive a uniform consisting of 4 shirts, 1 hat, and 1 set of rain-gear. Interns will bring / supply their own trousers (no jeans or shorts allowed) and work-boots.

The internship is 10 weeks, June 3 – August 9.

All interns work 5 days a week (specific days and times vary depending on position).

Interns are paid biweekly at a competitive hourly rate of $15/hour.

College interns are eligible for a 403(b) Retirement Plan and Short Term Disability.

Eligibility:

Must be enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student and have completed at least one year of undergraduate coursework.

The property is certified and managed in accordance with the principles of bio-organic sustainability.

Seasonal Worker

Employer: The New York Botanical Garden
Location: Bronx, NY

The Seasonal Worker is a temporary full-time position. Under the direct supervision of gardeners, assistant foreman and foremen, the Seasonal Worker will be in the Outdoor Gardens in the maintenance of display gardens, herbaceous collections, and seasonal plantings. The Seasonal Worker will assist with garden work and general maintenance as required, such as planting, grooming, weeding, mulching, watering and other related tasks. The Seasonal Worker will use garden tools and operate machinery necessary for the performance of these duties including pruners, rakes, blowers, shovels, etc.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assists with the planting, watering, fertilizing, and grooming of plants.
  • Assists with the pruning of trees and shrubs, as necessary.
  • Assist with moving plant material and garden supplies from one site to another to facilitate proper care of plants.
  • Assist with spreading mulch and applying compost and other materials
  • Assist with weeding of planting beds and other landscape areas.
  • Operate small machinery when necessary to perform specific tasks.
  • Other related work as required.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid driver’s license required
  • High School Graduate or GED
  • The ability to follow instructions and work as a team
  • The ability to perform strenuous physical tasks in a variety of conditions, including the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
