Greenwood Gardens, a nonprofit public garden and historic site, is seeking a Seasonal Gardener.
Greenwood Gardens’ mission is to connect people with nature in an historic garden oasis. This 28-acre property was first developed as a private estate, circa 1914, and includes formal gardens, meadows, and natural areas, as well as many significant garden ornaments, outbuildings and pavilions. Greenwood currently has a $1.5 million annual operating budget, seven full-time staff members, and five part-time and/or seasonal staff members, and has just embarked on an ambitious multi-year Strategic Plan. This coming year we are embarking on several interesting capital and construction projects.
The Seasonal Gardener will join the horticulture department at Greenwood Gardens, which is comprised of a Head of Horticulture and a full-time gardener. This position is well-suited to an individual interested in a career in ornamental/public horticulture. Work activities include general garden maintenance, container displays and greenhouse work. The seasonal gardener’s daily tasks will include assisting with planting, watering, weeding, pruning, mulching and working in cooperation with all of Greenwood’s staff. The ideal candidate will be able to assist our facilities department with lawn mowing and hedge pruning. Candidates must be physically fit and prepared for outdoor work in all types of weather. The successful candidate will be expected to work with volunteers and help with occasional events. Greenwood is a small organization – a positive attitude and good work ethic is essential.
• Perform horticultural tasks such as planting, weeding, mulching and watering of display beds and garden areas.
• Ability to prune shrubs and small trees and to shear hedges.
• Familiarity with lawn mowers and hedge trimmers a plus.
• Ability to lift 50 lbs.
• Ability to properly use shovels, rakes, digging forks, weed wrenches, hand shears and loppers to complete assigned tasks.
• Ability to follow instructions and to take initiative; Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
Hours and Compensation
Duration: late -April/May – October/November (start and end dates flexible).
Compensation: $18 per hour; 37.5 hours per week.
