Compensation: $32,760-$47,740
Under supervision, the Assistant Horticulturist is responsible for assisting Horticulturists and Senior Horticulturists in performing all horticulture field operations at locations throughout Battery Park City Authority owned Parks.
Responsibilities/Duties
- Assist in all horticultural tasks as requested; use the best horticultural practices to help, maintain, develop, and beautify Battery Park City Parks
- Remove litter and maintain the highest appearance
- Assist with irrigation, focusing on optimum plant health and water conservation
- Assist with organic plant care
- Assist in developing healthy soils, including using compost and compost tea
- Assist in making compost
- Effectively operate and maintain equipment, including but not limited to vehicles, hand tools, power equipment, and safety equipment
- Assist with all aspects of plant care including planting, pruning, deadheading, mowing, edging, weeding, and mulching
- Work well independently on assigned tasks and contribute positively to team projects
- Assist with documentation, record keeping, and mapping as requested
- Perform snow and ice removal, including the use of snow shovels, ice breakers, snow blowers, and salt spreaders on an emergency and non-emergency basis during weekdays and weekends
Qualifications/Requirements
- A High School Diploma or GED is required along with some education in horticulture; a Horticulture Certificate or Degree is preferred. At least two (2) years of relevant experience in horticulture.
- Must have a valid U.S. driver’s license.
