Job Type: Full-Time, Year-Round; 40 hours per week; weekends and holidays required, overtime when required; Non-Exempt
Salary Range: $21.00 – $24.00 / hour

Randall’s Island Park Alliance, Inc. (RIPA) is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization that works with the City of New York and local communities to provide an innovative and exciting destination through a wide range of sports venues, public programs, cultural events, and environmental exploration. The Ballfield Technician will report to the Director of Grounds and the Sports Field Manager and will work with other members of the crew to maintain the surfaces of the athletic playing fields focusing primarily on the maintenance of 26 softball, 11 baseball, and 2 little league fields located on Randall’s Island. The Ballfield Technician will also assist with maintenance of both natural and artificial turf fields, as needed.
Responsibilities/Duties
- Work with the Randall’s Island Sports Field crew to assist with daily ballfield maintenance including, field dragging, field layout, dimensions, mowing, seeding, fertilizing, watering, leveling, laying sod, removing debris, and rolling.
- Assist with a variety of projects including, field leveling, mound repair, base installation, warning track maintenance, drainage, field renovation and maintenance building renovation.
- Operate hand tools such as various hoes, rakes, tampers, and shovels.
- Operate small equipment such as walk and riding lawnmowers, weed whackers, vibratory tamps, sod cutters, and backpack leaf blowers.
- Operate large equipment such as motorized utility vehicles, tractors, and skid steers.
- Ensure all equipment is secured and well-maintained, including, washing, greasing, fueling, and arranging for service of equipment.
- Perform other general tasks as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements
- Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in turf maintenance
- Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in ballfield maintenance
- Advanced knowledge of and ability to assist with a variety of projects pertaining to the ballfields which can including field renovations, mound rebuilds and repairs, warning tracks, home plate, pitching rubber and base installation, aeration, seeding, and drainage.
- Knowledge of and ability to safely use hand tools essential to ballfield maintenance such as rakes, tampers, shovels, and various types of hoes.
- Ability to operate small equipment essential to maintaining a safe and enjoyable playing surface such as: weed whacker
- Knowledge of and ability to safely operate large equipment such as motorized utility vehicles, tractors, skid steers and corresponding attachments and implements routinely used to drag and level infields to maintain consistent playing surfaces
- Knowledge of the various field dimensions and playing formats.
- Ability to line ballfields for special events and knowledge of lining material.
- Knowledge of various infield amendments and their appropriate use and application.
- Excellent organizational skills, strong work ethic, desire to excel and willingness to learn.
- Possess creative problem solving and adaptive decision-making skills to help maintain 39 ballfields.
- Ability to collaborate and create positive working relationships.
- Ensure all equipment is secured and well maintained, including, washing, greasing, fueling, and arranging for service of equipment.
- Perform other general tasks as assigned.
- Ability to shift priorities and focus, when needed.
- Valid Driver License
- Proof of COVID-19 Vaccination
PREFERRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS
- One (1) year of materials applications experience
- Strong communication skills
- Pesticide license a plus
