Ballfields Groundskeeper and Clay Court Specialist

Compensation: $25-$29/hr

The Ballfields Groundskeeper will perform physically demanding tasks, work cooperatively with fellow groundskeepers, technicians, gardeners and volunteer, and interact respectfully with the public.  The idea candidate will demonstrate flexibility and have a positive attitude. This position involves maintenance of multiple facilities in a large park setting- strong time management skills are a must.   

Responsibilities/Duties

  •  Assist the ballfield supervisor with maintaining and advancing condition of ballfields, dog park areas and other park facilities.
  • Pickup litter in fields as needed. 
  • Inspect ballfield and facilities for safety hazards daily, remediate and report as needed. Inform supervisor when fields need to be closed for hazardous conditions and take measures to close the field.
  • In spring assist with full reclamation of red clay tennis courts. This includes but is not limited to removing debris from surface, clearing drains, conditioning clay, applying top dressing and securing lines. 
  • Grade, rake and replenish park surfaces as needed using ballfields grooming equipment (sand pro, drag mat, tractor etc).
  • Remove debris from fields, using dump truck when needed. 
  • Replace or repair range fencing as needed.
  • Maintain park signage as needed.
  • Deliver bulk material via dump truck.
  • Mow using ride on mower, edge with string trimmer regularly.
  • Perform basic maintenance duties for nearby plantings including weeding, mulching, watering, pruning and general cleanup.
  • Remove snow and ice from staircases.
  • Occasionally assist with hand digging/ trenching.
  • Check and clear drainage areas as needed. 
  • Seed and/or resod lawns as assigned by supervisor. 
  • Perform erosion control work under direction of supervisor
  • Remove leaves from fields and dog runs using blower, tow behind turbine, rake and leaf vac.
  • Remove brush, vines and invasives from field fence lines as needed.
  • Assist summer camp director with transport and other small tasks during camp season as needed. 
  • Perform other assigned duties as required.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Two years of experience in sports field, golf course or turf maintenance.
  • Experience with grading/leveling using machinery.
  • Must have a valid NYS driver’s license and ability to work a 6:00 am to 2:30 pm work day. Flexibility to work during weekends and occasional OT in afternoon is required.
  • Familiarity with operation of small tractor and ride on mower is a requirement. 
  • Must be comfortable working around dogs and children.
  • Must be able to perform daily reporting on work completed text, email or via asset management app. 
  • Must be able to lift 40 pounds with proper tools and work/ maneuver outdoors (in all weather conditions) on the 400-acre property’s often difficult terrain.
