Additional Information

About Newburgh: The City of Newburgh has a population of approximately 29,000 residents, 3.8 square miles, and approximately 4,000 publicly owned trees. The city lies on the western bank of the Hudson River in Orange County, New York. The city's location is 60 miles north of New York City and is known as the "Crossroads of the North-East," with local access to major roadways that provide connection to New York City, Philadelphia, Western New York State, New England, Canada, and beyond.

The city has a rich history throughout each era of the past. Among the notable historic occurrences in the city, and especially to those interested in horticulture, Newburgh is the birthplace and home of Andrew Jackson Downing (1815-1852). Downing is known as the founder of American landscape architecture and served as a mentor and collaborator to Calvert Vaux. In 1889, Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux created Downing Park, a 35-acre landscape park situated in the heart of the City of Newburgh. The park is filled with hills and valleys, streams, a pond, and a rich variety of vegetation. The park features serpentine paths and picturesque vistas that are very similar, though on a different scale, to those of Olmsted and Vaux's Central Park in New York City.
