Little Island’s Custodians are essential members of the Park Operations department, a collaborative team deeply passionate about creating and maintaining a beautiful and welcoming public space. In addition to the park’s outdoor spaces, Little Island also features performance venues, public restrooms, indoor meeting rooms, staff and artist areas, food carts, and various equipment. Custodians are responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the park and all of its facilities, working collaboratively across departments, jumping in to address park needs, and proactively communicating concerns to park leadership. Their work is vital in fostering welcoming and memorable experiences for visitors. Custodians report to the Park Operations Manager and are directly supervised by the Custodial Supervisor in their day-to-day work.

About the Role

  • Hourly Rate: $23.00

  • Employment Classification: Full-Time and Part-Time, Non-Exempt
  • Schedule Expectations: Custodians work a schedule spanning all operating hours of the park, with the flexibility to work early mornings, late evenings and holidays
  • Work Environment: Onsite park-based job
  • Start Date: March 5, 2026
  • End Date: September 27, 2026 with possible extension through October 31, 2026 depending on park needs

Responsibilities/Duties

  • Clean and maintain the park, including all paths, performance spaces, public restrooms, indoor staff and artist areas, and other facilities.
  • Monitor trash receptacles, replace trash bags, and transport waste to designated pick-up areas for removal by external services.
  • Work closely with the Park Operations team to remove leaves, debris, snow and ice, using provided equipment.
  • Report damage to the park or facilities and any hazards through the appropriate channels.
  • Set up and break down park furniture (tables, chairs, stanchions, etc.) for public events or to prepare for inclement weather.
  • Assist the Facilities team with maintenance tasks as needed.
  • Actively engage with visitors at Little Island, welcoming them into the park and communicating key information such as: park points of interest, park rules, background and historical information about the park, food and beverage offerings, and performance and programming details.
  • Participate in maintaining park safety and care, including de-escalating conflicts, following all emergency, weather, and safety protocols, and maintaining a high visual standard of the park, especially during times of high visitation or staff shortage.
  • Assist in tracking and reporting park visitations numbers as needed during staffing shortages.
  • Track and manage cleaning supplies, communicate restocking needs to the Custodial Supervisor, and ensure supplies are replenished when deliveries arrive.
  • Perform other duties and tasks related to park and its operations as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Understanding of proper cleaning and sanitation techniques and products.
  • A track record of being dependable, on time, and exercising good judgement.
  • Experience prioritizing safety while completing cleaning and maintenance tasks.
  • Experience with or willingness to learn to operate equipment such as power washers, leaf blowers, and snow blowers.
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods and perform physical tasks in various weather conditions, including light rain, summer heat, and direct sunlight.
  • Ability to lift or transport objects up to 50 lbs.
  • Possession of an OSHA 10 or 30 certification is a plus but not required.
  • Eligibility to work in the U.S.
