Compensation: $70,000-75,000 per year

The Environmental Program Manager (EPM) oversees all environmental programming done by the Bronx is Blooming. This includes the community volunteer program, the horticulture program, and the corporate service program, as well as advocacy surrounding environmental issues facing the Bronx. This position also trains and manages staff, interns, summer youth, and Americorps members in horticulture and stewardship work, highlighting plant identification, pruning, removing invasive species, planting, and general garden maintenance of the 40+ gardens planted/maintained by The Bronx is Blooming. The EPM also oversees tool inventory and transport, data management, reporting, and staff schedules, as well as other duties as assigned by the director.

Responsibilities/Duties

Team Management

  • Supervise the Environmental Program Coordinator, Tree Care Coordinator, and Horticulturists to ensure that all team members are working in tandem to deliver on program goals
  • Create field work schedules for horticulturists and Bridge program members so that events and work days are appropriately staffed
  • Collaborate with Youth Development Manager + Outreach and Education Manager to ensure mission sync across all programs

Execute High-quality Stewardship Events

  • Execute over 100 high quality volunteer events per year through community, school, and corporate partnerships
  • Connect with local community partners and companies to build a broad base of support around volunteer events
  • Approve run of shows, manage event schedule, and ensure all tools and supplies are present for all work days
  • Engage volunteers from a diverse array of backgrounds in stewardship activities relating to urban tree canopy care, native plant care, and invasive species management.

Environmental Education

  • Promote Environmental Stewardship in the Bronx at external community events, seminars, conferences, and on BiB social media platforms
  • Teach students and volunteers about the varying Environmental Justice issues facing communities in the Bronx

Horticulture Maintenance

  • Manage horticulture program that oversees the condition of 40+ garden beds and restoration spaces throughout the borough
  • Identify challenges related to urban gardens and research potential solutions
  • Assist with bed design and plant selection
  • Ensure all beds are properly maintained, including fencing and signage where applicable

Develop Community Relationships

  • Regularly collaborate with NYC Parks staff to share event + maintenance schedule, park event reports, and other partnership opportunities
  • Submit permits for all planned events, maintenance work, and research
  • Connect to local volunteer organizations, companies, schools and community boards to support community stewardship events 

Manage Supply Orders, Plant Care, and Tool Inventory

  • Determine supply needs for each event, including tools, mulch, and plant material
  • Submit purchase orders based on project budgets
  • Track inventory of each BiB storage facility, including any mulch or plant materials on site 
  • Maintain and care for plants and tool inventory when necessary 

Support Organizational Development

  • Assist with grant writing and program design proposals for new grants
  • Submit programmatic reports to foundations, city council, and other funders
  • Represent the organization at fundraising events, partnership meetings, and press conferences

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Passion for the environment
  • Minimum 4 years experience in Program Management or Community Event Coordination 
  • Minimum 2 years of personnel management experience
  • Knowledge of the unique challenges facing the Bronx community
  • Valid New York State Driver’s License + Ability to drive in NYC
  • Knowledge of species endemic to the area, and invasive to the area
  • Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions throughout the year
  • Able to lift 30-50 lbs

Additional Information

Schedule: This is a full-time, salaried position, 35-40 hours per week, and will require some evenings and early mornings. Schedule is usually Tuesday through Saturday during the growing season March-November, with occasional winter weekends. Winter schedule is primarily Monday-Friday, but this is subject to change. While this role will be primarily in person for program implementation, we have a flexible work from home policy during the off season. 

Compensation: Salary is $70,000-75,000, contingent on experience. Competitive benefits package.
