A private, 70 acre estate in Northern Westchester is seeking a passionate, creative and knowledgeable Estate Gardener to actively participate in the care and refinement of our very diverse series of gardens in Bedford, NY. The position is seasonal; full-time, with the potential for year round employment for a qualified, motivated self-starter.

Essential traits are a hands-on love of the outdoors and gardening, fitness for demanding physical work, strong communication skills and reliability, infectious enthusiasm and an inquisitive mind with the drive to learn and hone one’s knowledge and creativity. The Gardener, reporting to the Head Gardener, will participate in all aspects of plant health care and aesthetic throughout the property.



 

Responsibilities/Duties

  • The daily care and maintenance of containers, perennial, cutting, vegetable gardens and greenhouses; including planting, watering, fertilizing, weeding, deadheading, pruning, propagating and soil amending; using best horticultural practices. 
  • Monitoring, recognizing and reporting any signs of pest, disease, or cultural problems to our Head Gardener, and following through with treatment. Record keeping of treatments and applications.
  • Working in conjunction with other gardeners and landscape crew on large projects throughout the property.
  • Record keeping; including daily logging of completed work tasks, plant acquisitions, transplants and de-accessioned material; assisting in the maintenance of plant labels throughout the garden.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Horticultural education or demonstrated professional horticultural/gardening experience.
  • Strong plant identification skills and knowledge of cultural requirements.
  • Fine gardening skills and experience executing detailed work.
  • Ability to work independently and with others.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and work efficiently.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical work and a willingness to work in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Ability to properly use provided tools and equipment including shovels, rakes, digging forks, hand shears and loppers to complete necessary tasks.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and experience manipulating spreadsheets.
  • Ability to be flexible in a fast paced and dynamic environment where priorities shift due to variables like weather, scheduling and events.
