LWLA (Larry Weaner Landscape Associates) is nationally recognized for the creation of innovative, award-winning natural landscapes that combine environmental science with fine garden design. Founded in 1982, LWLA is involved in projects of various scales and from design through implementation throughout the east coast and beyond.
LWLA seeks to add a versatile landscape/horticulture professional to our field operations team. The position will assist with the installation and maintenance of meadow, woodland, and garden projects in New York’s mid-Hudson and Lower Hudson Valley regions, Long Island, and Western Connecticut.
This is a year-round, full-time position that reports to the jobsite directly with occasional work from a home office. Benefits include health, dental, retirement plan with employer contribution, paid holidays and vacation/sick time, and funding for continuing education.
Responsibilities/Duties
- Coordinate and lead implementation of garden installations and meadow and woodland restorations of varying scales and complexities, working independently or in collaboration with the LWLA design team
- Provide support in the creation and implementation of management plans for natural areas, including existing and new meadows, using creative and innovative management approaches to promote the succession of healthy, native ecosystems
- Provide oversight of experienced subcontractors for site preparation, construction, planting, and invasive species management
- Serve as primary contact with clients regarding site visits and scheduling
- Perform site monitoring visits to track project progress
- Prepare site visit reports and related documentation for Client and/or Contractors
- Perform plant and equipment pick-ups and deliveries to LWLA work sites
- Assist Design staff with project site analysis (pending demonstration of appropriate skills and knowledge)
- Maintain detailed project documentation with photos, reports, and associated paperwork
Qualifications/Requirements
- The candidate must have 1-3 years of experience in the installation and management of planted and seeded gardens, meadows, and woodlands
- Knowledge and experience working on traditional garden maintenance and ecological restoration projects
- Interest in learning about and utilizing a wide variety of vegetation management techniques
- Comfortable interacting with clients and managing/working with field crews while representing LWLA with the highest level of professionalism
- Willingness to travel, work outdoors in a variety of environmental conditions (heat, rain, cold, etc.) and have access to a personal vehicle (mileage is reimbursed by LWLA). Extended work hours during the growing season should be expected
- Proximity to LWLA projects is critical. The candidate must reside in, or be willing to relocate to, Westchester/Putnam County, NY or Fairfield County, CT
- Background in horticulture, ecology, landscape design, forestry, land management or other related field
- Ability to read and understand design drawings, landscape plans, designer direction, and client feedback
- Ability to identify common native and invasive plants in the field
- Experience managing landscape installation and management crews
- Excellent customer relations, with outstanding written and verbal communication
- Mature decision-making, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Able to lift 50+ lbs. and work outside in all weather conditions
- Valid driver's license and comfortable driving vans, trucks, and small trailers (up to 14’)
- Ability to travel up to 70% of the time in the LWLA area of operation with occasional overnight travel
- New York or Connecticut Pesticide Applicator license preferred
