Start Date: March 2026  Compensation: $35 or based on experience

We are seeking experienced freelance gardeners to join our growing company on an on-call basis this season for new garden installations, seasonal plantings and garden maintenance visits. A minimum of one year professional gardening experience is required, along with a great work ethic and a genuine interest in creating and maintaining beautiful garden spaces. 

Matthew Placek Inc. is a boutique landscape design and maintenance group specializing in residential rooftops, terraces, and townhouse gardens throughout New York City. Leading with an artist’s perspective and a personal love for horticulture,  Matthew Placek Inc. has grown to serve high end clients across NYC. 

This is an on-site, seasonal, independent contractor position with most hours available in spring and fall. There is opportunity for growth, responsibility and hours for the right candidate. Hourly rate is based on experience. 

Responsibilities/Duties

  • Assist lead gardener in all aspects of garden maintenance, seasonal plantings and installations. 
  • Planting, pruning, fertilizing, weeding, watering, mulching, raking, cleaning and sweeping,  with meticulous attention to detail. 
  • Alert senior gardener on all site conditions and plant health. 
  • Load-in/load out supplies on site. 

Qualifications/Requirements

  • A minimum of one year professional gardening experience. 
  • Hardworking, self-motivated and collaborative team player. 
  • Ability to take direction along with excellent problem solving skills and common sense. 
  • Excellent communication skills. 
  • Detail-oriented, professional and courteous. 
  • Interest in urban horticulture and motivated to develop professional gardening skills. 
  • Ability to carry 50 pounds and work in inclement weather.
  • Clean driving record, valid driver’s license a plus.
