The Full Time Gardener, under the direction of the Curator of Gardens, is responsible for assisting in the overall garden maintenance of the historic Rockefeller Estate overlooking the Hudson River. The estate is owned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and administered by the Rockefeller Brothers Fund.

The historic landscape overlooking the Hudson River is home to mixed perennial borders, a rose garden and formal hedges. Seasonal container displays grace terraces,shaded paths meander from grottos to scenic vistas. A newly planted native plant garden surrounds a soon to open creative arts center.


Responsibilities/Duties

  • Assist in maintaining all aspects of well-established garden areas —planting, dividing,transplanting, weeding, pruning, deadheading, fertilizing etc. as directed
  • Assist in keeping grounds neat and safe for visitors
  • Remove litter and maintain the highest appearance
  • Interact with the public in a polite and friendly manner
  • Other duties as instructed

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Must possess a strong knowledge of plant identification, plant growth and cultural requirements and an eye for detail
  • An interest in historic gardens is helpful
  • Ability to recognize pests and disease helpful
  • Some formal education in horticulture; a Horticulture Certificate or Degree is preferred. At least three (3) years of relevant experience in horticulture.
  • Must be self-motivated with a strong work ethic, work well with others and be responsive, with the ability to manage time efficiently and execute tasks independently
  • Ability to be flexible in a fast paced and dynamic environment where priorities shift due to variables like weather, scheduling and events
  • Ability to understand instructions and deadlines in
  • English and execute tasks as assigned, with ability to learn and handle routine tasks without close supervision.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of staff as a site team member.
  • Minimum physical requirements include: ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs on a frequent basis and occasionally more; ability to push or pull up to 50 lbs on a frequent basis and occasionally more; ability to bend, squat, kneel,twist/turn, climb, and reach above the shoulder frequently; and ability to drive an automatic or standard shift vehicle frequently.
  • Ability and willingness to work in all kinds of weather conditions
  • Valid driver’s license, with clean driving record
  • required. DMV background check and periodic updates may be required.
  • Some evening and weekend work required.
