Compensation: $24/hr
The Voelker Orth Museum is recruiting a part-time gardener. The gardener is responsible for the on-going care of the Museum’s garden, supported in their work by volunteers, 1-2 days a week (up to 12 hours per week). There are available work hours year-round.
A NYC Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Sites, the Voelker Orth Museum is located on a corner property that was formerly a family residence. An educational institution practicing ornamental horticulture, the Museum maintains a Victorian-style garden.
Pay rate is $24 @hour NOTE: The Museum contracts a lawn service, has an irrigation system and uses tree pruning services.
Responsibilities/Duties
- Propagates, plants, cultivates and maintain s garden and handles fertilizing, pruning, composting, and watering plans
- Maintains the greenhouse and shed
- Orders plant material and supplies for the garden
- Maintains a safe, clean and secure garden work environment and a comprehensive record of plantings and purchases;
- Serves on the Garden and Grounds Committee;
- Participates in selected public programs related to gardening (optional)
- Oversees care of Museum’s indoor plants.
Qualifications/Requirements
- Degree in ornamental horticulture, or related degree, or minimum of 5-years professional experience
- NYS Certified for garden chemical handling
- Physical ability to lift 40 lbs and handle routine gardening tasks
- Multi-lingual candidates welcome: ability to communicate verbally and in writing in English required
