Edwina von Gal is seeking an experienced gardener and manager to oversee Marshouse, her 4 acre garden and 2 residential buildings in East Hampton NY, and to assist with planning, installation coordination and maintenance strategies for a small number of client projects for her landscape design firm, Edwina von Gal +Co.
A commitment to nature based care, mentoring/training and education (in connection with PRFCT Earth Project) are woven into all projects and processes.
Responsibilities/Duties
The position will report directly to Edwina von Gal, with an office on the Marshouse grounds.
Marshouse
The Marshouse garden is where Edwina explores and demonstrates ideas for maximum respect of nature (it is her home too) - with beauty, and fun. The PRFCT Earth Project uses the garden to introduce the concept of nature-based land care to its audience through in-person engagement and digital outreach.
The Garden/Property Manager will be responsible for ensuring that the grounds and buildings are well maintained using sustainable practices. The position includes as much hands-on gardening as time allows and work with a crew (and Edwina) to do the rest. New ideas for exploring the potential for, and teaching of, ecological land care will be welcomed and encouraged.
- Maintenance of Garden and facilities
- Gardening, garden planning
- Planning and plant orders
- Record Keeping
- Coordinating, supervising, mentoring outside gardening help
- Regular observation and response to garden and facility needs
- Facilities maintenance: performing small repairs, or arranging for larger ones.
- House watching and house plant care when EvG is away.
- Event coordination assistance for occasional Garden Tours, classes and PRFCT Earth events held in the garden
- Contribute to ideas for events that maximize the potential of the garden for teaching
- Help EvG and PRFCT Earth staff plan and prepare garden for events
- Give garden tours to educate visitors about PRFCT Earth’s mission and ecological land caring
- Help PRFCT Earth communications team with photos, ideas and input for social media
Edwina von Gal + Co
Edwina’s landscape design firm is mostly in retirement but occasionally accepts projects that have the potential to enhance knowledge and understanding of ecological design and horticulture.
- Assist EvG with coordination of planning, installations, and maintenance supervision
- Work with landscape contractors on site to ensure smooth and successful installations
- Work with Clients to coordinate best maintenance practices and organize maintenance programs and hire and supervise land care teams for each project.
- Consult with “transition” clients to guide the process of successfully moving away from chemical and mechanical dependencies.
- Occasional travel may be an option
Qualifications/Requirements
- Min 3-5 years experience operating a garden and property
- Experience in professional landscaping a plus
- Experience in use and maintenance of garden equipment and tools
- Excellent horticultural knowledge with particular expertise in native plants and nature based plant health care and practices
- Knowledge of plant/wildlife interactions and experience designing with plant communities
- Super attention to detail
- Hands on, engaged leadership style
- Great observational and communication (spoken and written) skills
- Pleasure in sharing knowledge with others
- Curiosity and creativity
- Interest in, and familiarity with, arts and culture
- Commitment to local community engagement
- Adept at standard computer programs - Microsoft Word/Excel/Adobe
- Knowledge of GIS a plus
- Spanish language a plus
- Enjoy working independently
- Agreeable to work outdoors in variable weather conditions
- Able to lift 50 lbs and operate power tools
- Tremendous, proven passion for the environment and ecological land care
- Driver’s license and vehicle
- Willing and ready to relocate to Hamptons, Long Island
