Start Date: July 2025 Compensation: $20/hour
Second Chance Foods is seeking a passionate, organized, and hands-on Gleaning Coordinator to lead our seasonal gleaning efforts. This role is ideal for individuals who love being outdoors, have experience with harvesting produce, and enjoy working with volunteers. The Gleaning Coordinator will manage gleaning operations across multiple farm and orchard sites, coordinating logistics, building relationships with growers, and ensuring a positive and productive experience for our volunteers. This position plays a vital role in rescuing fresh, local food that would otherwise go to waste, and getting it into the hands of people who need it.
Responsibilities/Duties
Volunteer Management:
- Lead and supervise volunteer groups in the field during gleaning events
- Foster a welcoming, safe, and efficient working environment for all volunteers
- Communicate clearly about expectations, safety, and procedures
Farm & Orchard Outreach:
- Identify and build relationships with local farms, orchards, and other potential gleaning partners
- Coordinate with private orchard owners to schedule fruit gleaning events
- Maintain ongoing communication to ensure mutual understanding and successful collaboration
Logistics & Planning:
- Plan and schedule gleaning trips based on crop availability and volunteer capacity
- Track gleaned quantities and site participation for reporting purposes
Field Work:
- Participate hands-on in gleaning activities, modeling proper harvesting techniques
- Ensure tools and supplies are maintained and used safely
Qualifications/Requirements
- Previous experience in harvesting, farming, or garden work (required)
- Strong leadership and people management skills, especially in a volunteer setting
- Ability to work independently and make decisions in the field
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Comfort with flexible, outdoor, and physically demanding work
- A valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation
- Experience working with nonprofit or community food organizations (preferred but not required)
