Compensation: 15$ Hourly

Madison Square Park Conservancy is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to protect, nurture and enhance Madison Square Park, a dynamic seven-acre public green space, creating an environment that fosters moments of inspiration. The Conservancy is committed to engaging the community through its beautiful gardens, inviting amenities, and world-class programming.
Madison Square Park is looking for a Greenhouse Gardener to prepare for and manage the day to day maintenance of the temporary Mad. Sq. Hort. Greenhouse display from February through May 2020. The Greenhouse Gardener will also work in close cooperation with the Madison Square Park Horticulture and Public Programs teams to carry out all tasks necessary to design and activate the greenhouse. This includes assisting in the development of greenhouse programs, communications, research, tours, and workshops.

Responsibilities/Duties

  • Maintain the Mad. Sq. Hort. Greenhouse display to the highest standards of beauty, cleanliness, and horticulture
  • Install and maintain seasonal plantings and planters
  • Work with the program team in achieving Greenhouse programing goals
  • Conduct primary horticulture research into seasonal greenhouse displays and special projects
  • Assist in the preparation of Greenhouse training materials, schedules, and printed materials
  • Draft communications for Greenhouse activations
  • Work with partner organizations to activate the space
  • Serve as an informed and welcoming representative of Madison Square Park Conservancy
  • Lead public tours and workshops

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Strong interest in public horticulture
  • Strong written and communication skills
  • A dependable team player who enjoys working outdoors
  • Able to lift 50 pounds, stand, and/or walk for long periods of time
  • Attention to detail when maintaining the space
  • Able to respond to emails, radio inquiries, and requests in a timely and appropriate fashion
  • Able to engage and communicate with park guests of all ages
  • Able to self manage, troubleshoot, and problem solve in the field
  • Prior knowledge of public programming or placemaking a plus but not required
  • Familiarity with posting to social platforms a plus but not required

Additional Information

Time Commitment:
Must be able to work on a full time basis, February through May 2020
Activation will be open during the hours of 7:30AM and 7:30PM with shifts between 7AM–7:30PM
