Start Date: Immediate  Compensation: $45,760 per annum

NYRP improves, maintains, and programs open spaces in communities lacking adequate resources. Working on public and private land citywide, NYRP’s flexible approach to land management serves as a model for non-profit municipal engagement. Together with partners in city agencies, non-profit organizations, and local communities, NYRP demonstrates the social and environmental value of building ownership over open spaces.

Reporting to NYRP’s Landscape Manager the Groundskeeper assists in the general maintenance of parkland in Northern Manhattan, including Sherman Creek Park, Highbridge Park, and the Harlem River Greenway. The Groundskeeper may be required to pick up and deliver bulk landscaping materials and assist in executing greening projects city-wide. This position involves caring for a wide variety of landscapes including forests, gardens, and wetlands. The Groundskeeper plays a critical role in improving the accessibility, beauty, and ecological health of underserved parks. They will join an experienced operations team that works toward a more equitable and sustainable urban landscape.

Responsibilities/Duties

  • Clearing and edging paths
  • Litter and graffiti removal
  • Cleaning and maintenance of park infrastructure
  • Garden maintenance
  • Lawn mowing and edging
  • Lead groups of volunteers and seasonal staff
  • Cleaning of park restroom
  • Remove invasive vegetation from natural areas

Qualifications/Requirements

  • 2-years of experience in a full time, fast-paced, manual labor position
  • Experience with basic landscaping equipment and practices
  • Ability to identify common local plants or willingness to learn
  • Comfort interacting positively with the public in a diverse, underserved park
  • The ability to work and problem solve independently
  • The ability to complete tasks efficiently
  • The capacity to lift 50lbs
  • Stamina necessary to complete long shifts of landscaping work in all weather
  • Spanish language proficiency preferred
  • Driver’s license required
  • COVID vaccination is required to be considered for the position

Schedule: Sunday through Wednesday, 4 day work week/10 hours per day. Hours vary seasonally:
March 12th – August 31st: 9:30 am- 7:30 pm
September 1st – October 31st: 8:00 am- 6:00 pm
November 1st – March 11th: 7:00 am- 5:00 pm
