Start Date: 3/1/24 Compensation: 65,000-85,000 per year
Have you ever wandered through an old estate garden and wondered what it looked like in the beginning? Who were the first gardeners to train the espalier, to leave their mark through the careful pruning and care of climbing roses? Spiegel and Company has an exciting opportunity for a head gardener with a passion for horticulture to steward a large estate garden in its early days. We are looking for an enthusiastic gardener to oversee the extensive grounds on a 50-acre estate parcel in Pound Ridge, New York. The estate is currently being renovated with the first big garden installation phase set to be completed by Spring 2024. Over the next five years, we have plans for a greenhouse complex, rose garden and additional formal gardens.
We are currently constructing a 15,000 square foot walled garden that will produce all of the fruit and vegetables for the property and will also serve as a decorative feature for the estate. Additionally, there is a large boxwood collection that requires hand pruning. At Spiegel and Company, we are inspired by timeless gardens, and we hope to find an ambitious gardener who is ready to be a part of building and thoughtfully maintaining a garden that aims to be historic.
You will be responsible to the day-to-day operation of the grounds and gardens on a 50 acre estate. This will include managing a team of landscapers and lots of hands on gardening and specialty horticulture work.
Looking for someone with an extensive background in gardening/horticulture. If you have less experience but a great desire to learn, please feel free to apply. You must be willing to work outside consistently and year round.
All tools and work vehicles required will be provided on the property. It is preferred that the applicant has a personal vehicle to get to and from the property. Busy season runs from March 1- January 1 each year. Roughly 40 hours per week is requested during that period. However, this can be a flexible position in which time off during the busy season will be given with advance notice. This position becomes more flexible during January and February and the applicant would be encouraged to take time off and travel for part of this period.
