INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION
This internship is part of a four-week summer program, designed to provide hands-on experience, cross-departmental learning and professional development in urban environmental/non-profit careers. Interns will contribute to field-based projects at Randall’s Island Park, while participating in workshops, career panels, and a culminating project. Interns will contribute in a meaningful way to the Park and the organization and will gain foundational experience in a professional setting. Funding for the program has been generously provided through the Pinkerton Foundation. 

POSITION DESCRIPTION 
The Horticulture Intern will report to the Horticulture Manager and Director of Grounds and will work with other members of the Horticulture department to maintain gardens, meadows and green streets at Randall’s Island Park. The Intern will be required to work on-site and outdoors. This position will also work closely with, assist and take occasional direction from year-round Horticulturists and full-time seasonal Groundskeepers. The Intern will be dedicated to learning about and applying horticulture practices to benefit park patrons.   

Responsibilities/Duties

 
• Assist with horticultural activities and general maintenance work, including planting, weeding, pruning, mulching, watering, raking, edging, bed preparation, and caring for existing gardens, meadows and green streets. 
• Operate hand tools and basic power machinery, including hedge trimmers, weed whackers, and leaf blowers. 
• Ensure all equipment is secure and well-maintained. 
• General clean-up of garden beds and paths, litter removal. 
• Perform other general tasks as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements

  
• 18 years of age and above. 
• Interest in gardening, landscaping, parks and open spaces. 
• Motivated and punctual, able to work independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to use and/or learn how to use light power equipment and hand tools.
• Willing to work outdoors in all types of weather, under strenuous conditions.
• Ability to perform physical labor; must be able to lift up to 50lbs.
• Ability to collaborate and create positive working relationships.
• Ability to shift priorities and focus, when needed.
• Detail-oriented, with considerable attention to order and cleanliness throughout the park.
• Ability to answer questions from park patrons in a friendly and welcoming manner.

PREFERRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS
• Basic gardening/landscaping skills 
• Experience working with the public. 
• Good communication skills.
