Owned by the City of New York, the High Line is programmed, maintained, and operated by the Friends of the High Line, in partnership with NYC’s Parks. We raise nearly 100% of the High Line’s annual budget.

Through excellence in operations, stewardship, innovative programming, and world-class design, we seek to engage the vibrant and diverse community on and around the High Line, and to raise the essential private funding to help complete the High Line’s construction and create an
endowment for its future operations.

The horticulture manager is a full-time, exempt employee of the High Line and an integral part of the park operations team. Under the general supervision of the director of horticulture, the horticulture manager is the on-site point person for High Line horticulture staff. Working interactively with a team of gardeners, custodians, maintenance technicians, and High Line administrators, the horticulture manager’s responsibilities include all aspects of monitoring, caring for, and reporting on designated park zones, including diverse plantings, hardscape elements, and public use of the park.

Responsibilities/Duties

  • Supervise, manage, and provide support to horticulture staff composed of: horticulture supervisors, full-time and seasonal gardeners, and horticulture interns
  • Communicate regularly with the director of horticulture on status of projects, providing information and feedback on all areas of High Line horticulture
  • Work closely with the director of horticulture and horticulture supervisors to create immediate and long-term departmental goals and manage implementation by the horticulture staff
  • Follow up on individual and group work projects, with attention to deadlines and seasonal priorities
  • Supervise, manage, and support all plant orders and implementation of planting
  • Supervise, manage, and support horticulture staff to maintain diverse plantings of trees, shrubs, vines, perennials, grasses, and bulbs, with a focus on organic integrated pest management practices
  • Coordinate with third party vendors as needed; ensure the timely payment of vendor invoices
  • Oversee, supervise, and support the upkeep of current and accurate plant records (including photographs) and work logs for the horticulture department
  • Document all areas of logistics related to horticulture to assist in the creation of a management plan with clear five and ten year goals
  • Manage staff schedules and attendance and evaluate staff performance with the director of horticulture through performance reviews
  • Lead weekly meetings with horticulture supervisors and communicate information across horticulture team as necessary
  • Hire, orient, and train new horticulture supervisors
  • Execute departmental operating procedures: approve staff payroll, distribute staff uniforms, tools, and personal protective equipment
  • Deliver garden-based programming, such as public tours, to various stakeholders

Qualifications/Requirements

REQUIRED

  • Four or more years horticultural experience with in-depth knowledge of plant culture, maintenance, and identification
  • Managerial experience
  • Degree/certification in horticulture or a related field required
  • Valid New York State Class D drivers license, or ability to obtain one
  • Solid computer skills required: Microsoft and Google Office Suites
  • Able to operate electric equipment and power tools
  • Capacity to analyze, synthesize, visualize, and implement data to inform the development and execution of a department strategic plan
  • Must be a team player, willing to collaborate on all tasks required for maintaining the highest standards of
  • landscape management and operations, programs, development, communications, and any initiative to support the mission of the High Line
  • OSHA-30 certification or the ability to obtain certification
  • Demonstrated experience of professional work providing high quality visitor experience in a public institutional
  • setting

PREFERRED

  • Experience with online payroll systems
  • Ability to participate in a range of activities beyond the typical work day, including High Line events and programs, fundraising initiatives, tours, and stewardship
  • and cultivation activities as needed
  • New York State Pesticide Applicator 3A license, or ability to obtain one

ABILITIES

  • Able to perform heavy, physical labor in all weather conditions;
  • Able to walk, reach, stoop, kneel, crawl, and regularly lift and/or mover 50 lbs with proper tools.
  • Able to work alone or in groups, in all weather conditions
  • Able to work nights, holidays, and weekends as necessary
