The Garden
A 120 acre estate in the Hudson River Valley town of Garrison, NY. The estate was built in 1919 with the original landscape and garden design by Ellen Biddle Shipman. There are several woodland trails on the property, rose parterre, orchard, and mesic meadow plantings all currently under restoration or development. A 9,000 sq. ft. vegetable, cutting and display area was completed in 2017. The garden is implementing a master plan in collaboration with Arne Maynard Garden Design. A propagation greenhouse is on site.

This is a full time/salaried/year round position

Responsibilities/Duties

  • Clear understanding of and ability to carry out horticultural tasks such as soil prep/planting, weeding of ornamental and edible planting beds
  • Thorough command of dormant and growing season pruning techniques for trees, woodies, vines and roses
  • Thorough knowledge of deadheading/grooming/staking techniques for herbaceous and evergreen perennials and annuals and container plantings
  • Layout/plant vegetable seedlings/annuals/perennials in the landscape as well as container plantings
  • Watering/monitoring of irrigation systems on trees, woodies, planting beds, turf and containers and greenhouse plants/seedlings
  • Understand and implement propagation schedules
  • Solid knowledge of IPM; knowledge of identification/remediation resources for plant pests and disease issues for trees, woodies, roses, perennials, annuals and turf
  • As required, keep simple records and prepare written reports
  • May supervise other staff as directed
  • A keen eye for and adherence to the highest aesthetic applications in the landscape a must

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Two years full time experience in horticultural work, including planting and caring for plants, shrubs, trees, lawns, grounds keeping
  • 30 credits, at least 15 of them in horticulture or a related field, from an accredited college or community college, or
  • Education and/or experience equivalent to above two bullets
  • Ability to confidently operate power equipment such as mowers, weed whacker, chain saw, tractor a plus
  • Pesticide Applicator certification a plus
  • Must be team-oriented, self motivated, organized, hard working, willing and able to take direction, fit and able to lift/move 50lbs
  • Must have a valid New York State driver’s license and be available to work occasional weekends during the growing season
  • Must be willing to work in all types of weather conditions and at times challenging terrain
