Horticulturist/ Garden Supervisor
The Hay, Honey Farm is a private garden/arboretum with diverse plant collections developed over the last 30 years. Deer fenced garden areas cover about twenty-five acres, and contain perennial borders, dwarf conifer collections, organic vegetables and cut flowers, apple and peach orchards, meadows, and woodlands. The remaining two hundred acres of the property are roughly equally divided between open fields and wooded areas, and consist of hay fields, pastures, woodlots, and
riparian buffers. Restoration work is ongoing in woodlands both deer fenced and open to restore native flora and improve wildlife habitat. We participate in the Garden Conservancy Open Days program as well as other public and private tours. The diversity of the collections allows for an interesting and varied work experience.
This position works with directors of operations and horticulture, as well as with the natural lands steward.
Applicant should be a team player, goal oriented, energetic and self- directed,attentive to the detail work of fine gardening, with the ability to lead and instruct seasonal assistants. The ability to recognize common pests and invasive woody species and to make environmentally sensitive pesticide applications in fruits, vegetables, and ornamentals is critical to success. Experience maintaining fine turf is also helpful. This is a salaried position that requires seasonal flexibility of work hours.
Candidates should be
- Goal oriented, self-directed, and attentive to details, with good time management,organizational, and record-keeping skills.
- Able to handle multiple tasks and prioritize assignments to accommodate weather conditions, seasonal changes, and needs of special projects. Able to take direction well, problem solve, and communicate effectively with both supervisors and subordinates.
- Able to lift and carry 40 pounds, and comfortable performing physically challenging tasks,working independently or leading a crew, outdoors in all weather conditions,while maintaining a safe work environment. Willing to be flexible in hours worked to complete tasks as the seasons and weather dictate. Some early and late hours and weekend work are to be expected.
- Be familiar with commonly used hand and power tools and basic pruning techniques. Experience in operating chain saws and chippers, and maintenance of necessary power equipment, such as tractor mounted brush mowers, brush blades, chain saws is beneficial, but not necessary. Must possess a valid driver’s license.
Candidates should hold a degree in Ornamental Horticulture or Landscape Industry, with three years’ experience, or an equivalent body of knowledge and experience.
