Working under the Executive Director, the Landscape Curator will be responsible for the horticultural maintenance and development of 691 acre arboretum. The current conifer collection is one of the most extensive to be found in the United States. This important collection contains trees which, regionally, are the largest of their species. Perennial borders, woodland trails, coastal gardens, natural wetlands, forest, and a CSA Farm can also be found in the arboretum’s vast acreage. The arboretum has recently gained status as an American Holly Society “official holly arboretum”, an American Conifer Society Reference Garden, and as a level IV ArbNet accredited arboretum, an honor bestowed to only thirty-six arboreta in the world.

Responsibilities/Duties

  • Manage and supervise the daily horticultural activities of grounds staff, interns, and volunteers
  • Plan and prioritize work list, short term and long term
  • Manage projects of contractors
  • Coordinate and support the projects and work of gardeners/ grounds crew
  • Tree risk assessment
  • Support CSA farm
  • Plant procurement, inventory, and mapping
  • Manage internship program
  • Educate staff and public on sound horticultural practices
  • Research/interpret collections and develop vision for the future, within BCA Cultural Landscape Report

Qualifications/Requirements

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of horticulture, arboriculture, and the principals of landscape design
  • Self-starter with enthusiasm and passion for plants
  • Exceptional attention to detail, deadlines, and strong organizational skills
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, in writing and orally across various media platforms
  • Ability to foster positive relationships within horticultural community
  • Ability to work in a physical environment and to lift and carry 50lbs
  • Ability to operate garden machinery/ tools; mowers, chainsaw, skid steer, etc…

Qualifications/ Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture or related field.
  • Five years of leadership and management in public horticulture
