Compensation: $27 - $30/hr

The Lead Grower is responsible for managing the conservatory and shade house grow operations on a 600-acre private estate in Dutchess County, NY. Plants grown in the conservatory and shade house are used in the formal and ornamental vegetable gardens on the estate. The Lead Grower works directly with team horticulturists collaborating on displays and supplying needed plants throughout the season.

Diverse gardens throughout the 600 acres of this private estate include formal, woodland, organic vegetable, native plant, aquatic and cultivated meadows. A substantial glasshouse complex is both a feature and a hub of activity where ornamental plants and vegetable crops are grown to a high standard. Our team of 12 exceptionally skilled, knowledgeable and passionate horticulturists are raising the bar with respect to horticultural excellence. Responsibilities/Duties

  • Create & manage the propagation and up-potting schedules for all plants in the Conservatory & Shade House. Develop related task lists for staff – guide, monitor and supervise.
  • Maintain an attractive “working greenhouse” display throughout the growing season
  • Monitor greenhouse structures and systems and initiate/facilitate repairs as needed
  • Collaborate with the team on proposed designs for containers and planters
  • Further develop and maintain on-site cut flower gardens
  • Display commitment to excellence and a keen eye for detail
  • Bring creative solutions to challenges
  • Use fertilizers, insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides with the label stated safety precautions
  • Weekly computer usage
  • This is a hands-on job, and the candidate must be able to lift 40 pounds safely, stand, squat, and kneel throughout an 8-hour day, and work safely in extreme environmental conditions

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Degree in horticulture and 3 - 5 years of experience in the horticultural field. Greater experience may be substituted for educational requirements.
  • Fundamental background in greenhouse care/growing and ornamental horticulture. General gardening skills and experience including soil preparation, planting, plant maintenance, watering, feeding, pruning, propagation, pest and disease identification and management, etc.
  • Good plant knowledge balanced with a learner’s mindset
  • Superb communication skills, a passion for plants and gardens and a sound work ethic are essential
  • Ability to contribute to team Integrated Pest Management effort, including scouting for pests and diseases, pest identification and recommendations for control, applying herbicides, pesticides, fungicides or other products as necessary.
  • Specialization(s) in any of the following are desirable: florist skills, fine gardening skills
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Leadership skills including managing crews and projects desirable
  • Possess or be willing to acquire a NYS Pesticide Applicator’s License within 1 year of employment

Additional Information

This is a full-time, year-round opportunity with a full benefits package. Occasional weekend work, holiday coverage and overtime during peaks in the growing season are required.
