Compensation: $27.03 per hour

Brooklyn Grange, the world’s leading rooftop farming and intensive green roof business is seeking an experienced, positive, hard-working individual to help execute the installation of green roof and other urban landscaped spaces.  The Design/Build department is charged with the design, construction, and maintenance of varied projects that include commercial green roofs, rooftop meadows, residential roofs/terraces/yards, indoor green walls, edible landscapes, stone and wooden hardscapes, irrigation, and more.  Key responsibilities of the Lead Installer role include onsite construction of landscaped spaces, and crew management and oversight.  

The Lead Installer is a motivated, driven, and creative problem solver who can maintain Brooklyn Grange’s standards throughout all phases of a green space buildout.  Applicants should be positive and passionate about green spaces and sustainability, and should have experience installing construction projects successfully from initial load in, to final punch list.  Additionally, the Lead Installer should be able to lead, organize, and help train crew, while also having a handle on big picture execution.  The Lead Installer should have a keen sense of crew needs and be able to clearly communicate with and delegate to crew, as well as address their safety and wellbeing according to OSHA and NYC DOB safety standards.  


 

Responsibilities/Duties

  • Construct beautiful, professional, and successful landscape and hardscape installations, including green roof systems, planter boxes and container gardens, green walls, stone patios, etc.
  • Help oversee, motivate, and lead a tight knit crew; create and foster a positive work environment for the Installations team
  • Run point on daily installation work and ensure proper execution of project installation, with support of Project Managers
  • Execute on-site problem solving and best practices; be comfortable identifying potential issues and raising up questions to ensure successful and safe project installation
  • Complete installations efficiently, in keeping with project timelines, budgets, and construction documents
  • Communicate clearly with Design/Build management team, as well as clients and relevant stakeholders during installations, and bring courteous professionalism to all interactions
  • Maintain orderly and safe work spaces, vehicles, and material/tool inventory
  • Support, collaborate, and communicate with Design/Build managerial team, including Director of Design/Build, Project Managers, Design/Build Operations Manager, Head Gardener and Garden Managers, assisting with other aspects of department work
  • Must be willing to jump-in on other work as needed, demonstrating initiative and a true team player role

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Has 2+ years of experience in the landscaping and/or hardscaping field, or other relevant experience, including green roofs, stone work, carpentry, etc.
  • Can read, understand, and follow construction documents, design specs, and planting plans
  • Is well versed in project installation and project timelines; specifically has experience with onsite project and team leadership
  • Has knowledge of general assembly techniques, and is comfortable operating light machinery and power tools; carpentry skills a plus
  • Understands, or can quickly learn, the successful implementation and maintenance of basic irrigation systems
  • Familiar with Northeastern plants in zones 4 through 7b preferred, but not required
  • Is positive, energetic, and has a strong work ethic, and can lead and motivate crew members
  • Has strong communication skills
  • Is highly organized, has a strong attention to detail, and has the ability to self-pace and manage time efficiently
  • Is able to work outdoors in any weather.
  • Holds a valid driver’s license and is comfortable driving large vehicles in the city.
  • Can lift 50 lbs. repeatedly, and can squat, kneel, bend over, and reach for extended periods of time; can undertake the repeated physical labor of landscaping work required of the position.
  • OSHA 30 and 10 hours of SST training (total 40 hours Site Safety Training) preferred, but not required
  • Certification to drive a forklift a plus, but not required
  • Ability to communicate in Spanish a plus, but not required
