Start Date: April  Compensation: $20-$30/hr depending on experience

Dynamic landscape urbanism and urban ecology firm in Brooklyn with a diverse portfolio and a commitment to sustainable practices is seeking a seasonal Maintenance Gardener who is passionate, hard-working and highly skilled. Maintenance Gardeners will perform all aspects of garden maintenance work including, weeding, deadheading, pruning, fertilizing, and installation of new plantings. Ideal candidate with have at least 2 previous seasons gardening experience, a working horticultural knowledge of herbaceous and woody plants, excellent plant and weed ID, and a commitment to detailed oriented work. The Maintenance Gardener is a seasonal, part-time position, estimated 24-32 hours a week, Monday-Friday, April through November. The ideal candidate will be available to work through the entire season. We are looking for someone who genuinely loves working with plants, works well with a small team (typically 2 -3 people) and is interested in learning more about native plants and ecological landscape design and practices.

Responsibilities/Duties

  • Perform tasks such as weeding, deadheading, pruning and hand watering, fertilizing, sweeping, removal of refuse from site
  • Monitor gardens, take notes and if applicable send images and report any issues to Head Gardener
  • Strong plant and weed ID and a working horticultural knowledge of, pest
  • 2 or more years garden work experience
  • Ability to lift 50 +lbs.
  • Ability to work independently and with a team
  • Willingness to work in inclement weather and in tricky site conditions (many of our sites are on rooftops)
  • Excellent communication skills and willingness to follow directions and practice kind and direct communication
  • Must have a valid NYC drivers license with clean driving record and ability to drive a cargo van
  • Must be a detail oriented and time conscious worker

Future Green is a Design/Build Landscape Architecture firm based in Red Hook, Brooklyn. We are a unique company, engaging in both speculative, urban, large scale conceptual landscape urbanism as well as small scale garden and art interventions. Maintenance Gardeners primarily maintain rooftop gardens designed and installed by Future Green. Because of this, we have a unique commitment and prospective into the gardens we maintain. Though gardeners primarily work in the field, they are an integral part of our company. Gardeners often collaborate with our Shop crew (wood and metal shop), our Install crew (construction and on-site build) and Design office (Landscape Architects) to create and maintain landscapes that are committed to ecological design and greening New York City rooftops.
