The Round House Center for Ecological Gardens is developing a disciplined, seed-based native plant propagation program focused on regional ecotypes and production accuracy.

Located at the historic Round House in Wilton, Connecticut, the surrounding landscapes have been developed over the past fifteen years in collaboration with ecological landscape designer Darrel Morrison. The Center is now establishing an on-site nursery dedicated to the propagation of native plants from seed for use in ecological landscapes .

This full-time seasonal position offers hands-on experience in native plant propagation within a small, focused team working in a rigorously managed ecological landscape.The job could start  anytime between now and April and run through the end of October.

The Center anticipates continued expansion of its native plant program. Strong performance in this role may lead to ongoing full-time employment.

Responsibilities/Duties

The Nursery Assistant will support the implementation and daily operation of the native plant production program. Working in close coordination with the Center’s Botanist, the position combines propagation, seed handling, and field-based ecological work within a 100% organic, chemical-free framework.

This is a full-time position requiring attention to detail, physical stamina, and a commitment to ecological horticulture. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to the development of a rigorously managed native plant propagation program within an ecologically significant landscape.Duties & Responsibilities

Essential Duties

  • Assist with seed cleaning, stratification, and sowing protocols
  • Execute plug production schedules and transplant cycles
  • Maintain accurate labeling, batch tracking, and plant inventory systems
  • Record sowing data, germination rates, survival percentages, and production metrics
  • Must be highly organized and detail oriented
  • Support native seed collection and grass production efforts
  • Assist with field installation and meadow establishment
  • Participate in manual invasive species management (no chemical applications)
  • Maintain clear, consistent daily production and field records

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Training or experience in horticulture, botany, ecology, or related discipline
  • Experience with greenhouse production or native plant propagation preferred
  • Strong organizational skills and comfort with data recording (spreadsheets)
  • Ability to work independently within a small, collaborative team
