Little Island seeks a Park Supervisor to join the leadership team of the Park Operations department, a dynamic team of collaborative and motivated individuals who collectively care for the park and its visitors. Reporting to the Park Operations Manager, Park Supervisors drive onsite decision-making and park-wide communication to ensure Little Island’s standards of safety, accessibility, and hospitality are maintained. They support the Park Operations Manager in the day-to-day oversight of Little Island’s Custodians and Park Attendants, building trust and collaborating with team members directly in the field, providing frequent feedback and encouragement. Supervisors will collaborate across all departments at Little Island, especially with the facilities, horticulture, and security personnel, to ensure all staff are aligned, informed, and supporting each other to deliver an excellent park experience each day.

The ideal Park Supervisor is a galvanizing collaborator and leader who is excited to work outdoors and provide support to a diverse field team. Park Supervisors are equally passionate about the caretaking of our beautiful facility and the ongoing support of staff who work primarily onsite at the park. They have an understanding and comfort with safety and emergency response protocols, with the ability to remain intentional and grounded in our values while making decisions under pressure. Responsibilities/Duties

  • Work in the park alongside the park team, acting as shift leader and ensuring the staff has the information, tools, and support they need
  • Act as the key point of contact on Little Island for other Little Island departments, third party vendors, and artists as necessary, intersecting often with the workflows of Little Island’s vendors in service to fostering communication and collaboration across all Little Island’s operations
  • Draft weekly schedules for the Custodial and Park Attendant teams under the direction of the Park Operations Manager to approve
  • Adjust workflows of staff during shifts when necessary to compensate for scheduled and unscheduled absences, priority changes, projects, and special events
  • Provide consistent and constructive feedback and coaching to the park staff in the field to allow each employee to authentically engage with our visitors, represent our values, and maintain our standards of cleanliness, safety, hospitality. Provide verbal and written feedback or policy warnings as appropriate
  • Support the Park Operations Manager in conducting annual performance reviews for the Park Attendant and Custodial teams
  • Escalate concerns and recommendations to the Park Operations Manager to ensure compliance with operational policies and procedures and accurate incident tracking
  • Collaborate with the Park Operations Manager and Employee Experience department on the ongoing training and development of staff on our park’s history, safety, building a welcoming and inclusive park, and key park protocols. This role will be instrumental in ensuring follow-through in the field on all department systems and protocols
  • Assist with oversight and creation of daily reporting and incident reporting systems to ensure consistent and clear documentation of park activity
  • Collaborate with the administrative Operations team on the execution and refinement of administrative systems; ensuring systems are implemented effectively throughout the park and offering feedback on their efficacy in the field

Safety and Overall Park Care

  • Inspect all park facilities and property areas daily with the intention to identify and troubleshoot problems and liaise with appropriate stakeholders to achieve resolution
  • Act as a key member of the safety team, demonstrating good judgement when there are new or changing conditions in the park, or cases of evacuation or escalation
  • Serve as the primary point of contact in enacting emergency response protocols, liaising directly with Park Enforcement Patrol, NYPD, and onsite security personnel.
  • Track and administer any changes to access throughout the park; clear and close areas as needed in response to established visitation or safety protocols
  • Play a leadership role in all weather-related activity (snow and ice removal, hurricane preparation, etc.). Park Supervisors will be trained to use equipment such as snow blowers or snow broom
  • Supervise the opening and/or closing of the park as schedule
  • Assist with custodial tasks, focusing on waste removal and maintaining the visual standard of the park, during times of high visitation or staff shortage
  • Liaise with the programming, production, education, and house management teams to ensure the successful coordination and execution of all events
  • Other duties and tasks related to the park and its operations as assigned

Qualifications/Requirements

  • 3+ years’ experience in leading a public-facing team; experience in public, outdoor, and/or artistic spaces preferred
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills
  • An intentional approach to decision-making and conflict resolution, with experience demonstrating good judgement and remaining grounded in dynamic scenarios
  • Ability to transport, move, and utilize park equipment weighing up to 50 lbs., as well as move materials, furniture, and equipment into various positions within the park
  • Valid NY driver’s license with clean driving record required
  • Possession of OSHA 10 or 30 certification preferred
  • Ability to work in US
