The Lincoln Square Business Improvement District (BID), a small not-for-profit 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization is seeking a part time Gardener (Jane/Jack of All Trades!) to join our team during the late spring, summer and fall to assist with various horticultural, gardening and maintenance projects in Lincoln Square – the gateway to the Upper West Side.

Since its founding in 1996, the Lincoln Square BID has been charged with making this Upper West Side neighborhood clean, safe and beautiful. The BID is responsible for the Broadway Malls from 60th to 70th Street and two small parks, Dante and Richard Tucker, as well as 66 planters of varying size and 18 urns in the Broadway Mall end beds. Although the BID has hired a landscape company to purchase and install plants, and perform bi-monthly maintenance, including watering and deadheading, the part-time gardener would work with the BID staff to make sure that all horticultural concerns are addressed. This is an excellent opportunity for someone interested in urban gardening who loves working outside and getting their hands dirty.

This position’s duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • General garden maintenance
  • Pruning of small trees and shrubs
  • Deadheading annuals, cutting back perennials
  • Weeding if necessary
  • Other general maintenance tasks, including arranging café tables, chairs and umbrellas
  • Communicating on behalf of the BID with the landscape company on issues which must be addressed
  • In conjunction with BID staff, oversee the installation of seasonal displays
  • Working with the landscape company and BID staff on plant/cultivar suggestions
  • Work with BID Clean Team
  • Assist if necessary with use of portable water tank to supplement watering

Qualifications & Skills:

  • At least two years of horticulture experience and or training
  • Possess a working knowledge of plants, shrubs, annuals and perennials
  • Familiar with plants that will survive in harsh conditions
  • Enthusiasm and interest in urban gardens and quality of life
  • Enjoy working as a team, but must be able to work independently
  • Must be in excellent physical condition and willing to work in all weather conditions
  • Dependable and punctual with an excellent work ethic
  • Positive attitude with a love of plants and flowers
  • Handy with small tools, a plus

Approximate number of hours: flexible schedule; 15 - 20 per week (May – November)

Hourly rate of pay based on experience.
