The Old Yew is a design-driven plant shop and landscape company rooted in New York City. With retail locations in the West Village and the Upper West Side, we specialize in boutique plant retail and interior and exterior plant design for residential, commercial, and hospitality clients.
Our outdoor work includes terraces, backyards, rooftops, container gardens, and seasonal installations throughout the city. We are looking for an experienced, thoughtful, hands-on gardener to help maintain and care for these spaces.
Who You Are
We are seeking a dependable, detail-oriented Part-Time Outdoor Gardener to support the care and maintenance of our clients’ outdoor gardens and terrace plantings across New York City.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working outdoors, takes pride in well-kept gardens, and has a strong eye for plant health and seasonal upkeep. You will work both independently and alongside our landscape maintenance team to ensure each space remains healthy, beautiful, and consistent with The Old Yew’s design and upkeep standards.
Responsibilities/Duties
- Maintain outdoor gardens, terraces, and container plantings throughout NYC
- Prune, deadhead, and shape shrubs, perennials, and small trees
- Weed garden beds and planters to maintain clean, healthy plantings
- Monitor plant health and identify issues related to pests, disease, or watering
- Assist with seasonal planting rotations and garden refreshes
- Install annuals, bulbs, and seasonal color plantings
- Support spring garden openings and fall garden closings
- Prepare outdoor plants for seasonal weather conditions
- Water containers and garden beds as needed
- Apply fertilizers and plant treatments when required
- Monitor soil conditions and drainage in planters and beds
- Interface directly with clients for access and site questions
- Maintain clean and orderly garden spaces
- Keep tools and equipment organized and in good working condition
- Communicate plant or site concerns to the Maintenance Foreman
Qualifications/Requirements
- Prior gardening or horticulture experience required
- Ability to work independently and as part of a small team
- Ability to commute via public transportation
- Ability to drive a commercial vehicle in NYC required
- Familiarity with basic plant care, pruning, and seasonal garden maintenance
- Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Ability to lift and carry plants, soil, and tools (up to ~50 lbs)
- Strong attention to detail and pride in well-maintained spaces
Additional Information
- Part-time, typically 2–3 days per week
- Seasonal or year-round depending on availability and schedule
- Workdays take place across multiple client sites in Manhattan and Brooklyn
