Compensation: Commensurate with experience
The Plant Records Manager oversees the management, analysis, and presentation of plant records data and other information related to the extant and historic living collections of the New York Botanical Garden. The position manages the Lionel Goldfrank Ill Computerized Catalog of the Living Collections (in BG-BASE and other databases); creates and updates electronic maps of the landscape, glasshouses, and living collections (in ArcGIS, AutoCAD, and other mapping and GIS software); and works in collaboration with Horticulture curators to ensure accurate records for all living collections.
The Plant Records Manager is responsible for creating and maintaining accession and display labels for the living collections, exhibitions, and seasonal displays. The Plant Records Manager supports the creation of signage and interpretation, digital content, and other public facing information about the living collections, and provides information about the living collections to NYBG staff, NYBG and visiting researchers, the public, and other stakeholders. The position directly supervises the Senior Plant Recorder and oversees students and volunteers as required.
Additionally, this position supports, through actions and conduct, NYBG's Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility initiatives and helps to build and maintain an inclusive organization culture throughout the institution.
Responsibilities/Duties
- Directly supervises the Senior Plant Recorder and supports them in their day-to-day work.
- Through BG-Base. ArcGIS, and other software, creates, manages, analyzes, and presents data on the living collections including accessioning, de-accessioning, updating determinations and nomenclature, tracking phenology data, etc.
- Through ArcGIS and other software, oversees the development and maintenance of electronic maps of collections, displays, gardens, and landscapes.
- Assembles information from various sources about the history, development, and current status of the living collections and shares this information through published reports, presentations, and other means.
Maintains accurate and up-to-date plant identification verifications and taxonomy. - Coordinates all plant labeling, including the production and installation of accession and display labels for the permanent collections and display labels for exhibitions, and seasonal displays.
- Maintains current inventories and historic records required to document the collections.
- Works closely with staff in all divisions of The New York Botanical Garden to respond to inquiries about the living collections and to provide accurate information about the living collections to scientists, visitors, media, students, and other stakeholders.
- Supports efforts to make accurate information about the living collections available to the public through signage and interpretation, various digital platforms, and other media.
- Participates in and supports institutional events.
- Participates in divisional and institutional planning and policy making.
- Performs other related work as required.
Qualifications/Requirements
- Experience managing a collections database, familiarity with BG-Base or similar plant records database preferred.
- Some knowledge of plant identification, plant nomenclature, and taxonomy.
- Some familiarity with the botanical and horticulturc litcrature specifically related to plant nomenclature.
- Some experience with electronic mapping and surveying systems such as BG-Map, ArcGIS, GPS, AutoCAD, or similar systems
- Bachelor's degree in horticulture, botany, or library science preferred.
- Excellent organizational skills.
Proficiency with the typical suite of Microsoft Office software. - A professional and collaborative approach to work.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
