Compensation: $18/hour

The Alliance for Downtown New York manages the Downtown-Lower Manhattan Business Improvement District (BID) serving an area roughly from City Hall to the Battery, from the East River to West Street. We provide a host of services, including supplemental sanitation and security, economic development, streetscape and transportation improvements, marketing and enhanced tourist services. As part of its supplemental services, the Downtown Alliance maintains planted areas across nine public spaces, as well as planters throughout Lower Manhattan.

POSITION DESCRIPTION The Alliance for Downtown New York seeks applicants for the position of Seasonal Gardener in the Operations Department. This position will require 32 hours a week, with working hours of 8AM-4PM from May through November. Reporting to the District Landscape Manager, the Seasonal Gardener will be responsible for performing landscape and horticultural maintenance across nine public plazas and parks, which includes caring for planted areas and over 140 planters.

Responsibilities/Duties

  • Work on daily tasks as defined by the District Landscape Manager, including planting, mulching, weeding, watering, string trimming, mowing, trash removal, and pruning.
  • Observe safety protocols; interact with the public in a friendly and positive manner.
  • Assist in planting, watering, mulching, and moving planters.
  • Report all observed weed and pest problems.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and shared storage space.
  • Gather botanical data on our parks and gardens.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Candidate must be vaccinated for Covid-19 and show proof of vaccination prior to hire
  • Candidate must agree to undergo background check
  • Excellent work ethic and communication skills
  • The ability to work consistently, independently, and with a team
  • Minimum of 1 year experience in landscaping, gardening, or agriculture; horticultural education may be substituted for experience.
  • High School diploma/GED is required.

Pay range is Minimum of $18/hour, Maximum of $18/hour.
This position is eligible for overtime under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act for any hours worked over 40 in a workweek. Employees accrue sick leave at the rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, up to a maximum of 40 hours of sick leave per calendar year.
