Start Date: April 2023 Compensation: $25 - $32/hour
Seeking part-time seasonal gardener to assist with garden installations and maintenance, 3-4 days a week, late March - mid July, possibly longer. The ideal candidate will have a positive attitude, an excellent work ethic and desire to learn, a passion for gardens and an interest in design. Ideally you will have at least 2-3 years of gardening or nursery experience, including one season of experience with urban gardens and some formal horticultural training/education.
For those interested in design, drafting, or plant sourcing, more hours are possible.
Responsibilities/Duties
- Assist with garden installations in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Westchester, from start to finish, from sourcing, loading and delivering plants to unloading, preparing beds and planters, planting, cleanup and load out, and sending reports to owner and/or project manager, as needed
- Maintain gardens in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Westchester; including pruning, deadheading, dividing, transplanting, fertilizing, weeding, monitoring and treating of pests and diseases, monitoring of irrigation needs and ensuring all properties are left in perfect order
- Take detailed notes and good photos of your observations while on properties and include these in your daily reports sent to the owner or project manager each day
- Assist with maintenance of our plant inventory kept in Astoria
- Assist with plant sourcing, and delivering plants to our storage yard in Astoria, or directly to client sites
- Assist, if qualified, with proposals and/or drafting
Qualifications/Requirements
- Minimum of 2 years of experience working in the landscape/garden/horticultural field and/or some formal training or education in the field
- Excellent plant Identification skills , and an understanding of appropriate siting for different plants
- Good Plant care knowledge, including Pest ID skills and some knowledge of IPM and willingness to research issues as needed, and familiarity with pruning timing/techniques
- An eye for detail, and a demonstrated design sensibility
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team
- Excellent communication skills, and the ability to send detailed daily reports with images of our clients’s properties at the end of day
- Professional and courteous manner
- Punctual, with a willingness to commit to early and sometimes long days
- Considerate of our clients’ homes and work-spaces
- Ability to lift 50 lbs
- Ability to perform laborious, often repetitive tasks, in a variety of weather conditions
- Valid Driver's License and ability to drive and park a small cargo van in NYC
- Willingness to drive to nurseries and source and load plants when needed
Desired, but not required qualifications
- Some familiarity with landscape design software, or with drafting proposals
- Experience with container planting/container design
- Experience sourcing and selecting plants, or plant nursery experience
