Matthew Placek Inc. is a boutique landscape design-build-maintenance group specializing in residential rooftops, terraces and townhouse gardens throughout NYC. Starting out of a personal love for horticulture, Matthew Placek expanded to serve high-end clients across NYC, with an unwavering eye for detail and an artist’s perspective. We are seeking a senior gardener to join our team and work alongside Matthew Placek. 

This is a part-time, seasonal, independent contractor position starting at $50 per hour, or based on experience.  The season is generally March – end of December. Independent contractors are paid on a weekly basis. There are occasional days off due to inclement weather. 

We are looking for someone to grow with our company, there is full-time salary potential for the right candidate.

Responsibilities/Duties

  • Direct garden crew for garden maintenance, seasonal plantings and installations.
  • Act as a liaison between the client and office.
  • Train garden crew on correct methods for planting, transplanting, pruning and general garden care.
  • Oversee irrigation and lighting systems.
  • Oversee plant nutrition and disease treatment in maintaining health of plants.
  • Comply with office workflow (i.e. tracking hours, work orders, Slack).
  • Drive supplies to location and load-in with crew support.
  • Select, purchase and pickup plants at nurseries, while maintaining the design sensibility established for each garden.
  • End of day reports

Qualifications/Requirements

  • 2 + years of hands-on NYC gardening experience (rooftops, terraces, containers and townhouse gardens).
  • Highly self-motivated, responsible, excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Strong plant i-D and care knowledge, with an artistic attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage a small team of gardeners, to take direction, prioritize and multi-task.
  • Experience working in client-facing role.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience in irrigation and landscape lighting.
  • Plant pest ID and treatment.
  • Ability to work in inclement weather and carry 50 pounds.
  • Clean driving record with valid driver’s license plus smart phone.
  • Access to a vehicle is a plus but not necessary.
  • A degree in horticulture, landscape design or related field is desirable, but not necessary.
  • AutoCad and/or Sketchup a plus, but not necessary
