The Senior Horticulturist is responsible for areas of Battery Park City Parks as requested by senior staff.


  • Garden effectively in the assigned area(s) using the best sustainable horticultural practices; develop and maintain the areas
  • Plant, prune, mow, weed, deadhead, and care for plants throughout Battery Park City’s parks
  • Care for the soil, make and use compost, and organically create the best possible growing environment for plants
  • Monitor the health of plants, detect health challenges, and if necessary, use the least toxic controls for pests and diseases; keep detailed records of all issues and solutions, and fulfill mandatory reporting and communication requirements
  • Document and record plantings, work records, and other needed information
  • Plan work, set up, lead, and mentor junior staff to effectively achieve agreed goals
  • Effectively set up daily, weekly, and seasonal activity, as agreed with Director and Assistant Director of Horticulture, and contribute to department-wide planning as requested
  • Supervise, mentor, teach, and evaluate junior staff
  • Interact with the public in a polite and friendly manner
  • Work effectively individually as well as in team projects. Lead and coordinate as needed.
  • Effectively operate and maintain equipment, including but not limited to vehicles, hand tools, power equipment, and safety equipment
  • When requested, work closely with other Parks Operations staff or departments to develop and execute public educational activities such as garden tours and garden volunteer programs
  • Actively work with irrigation systems and help ensure they work effectively; this includes planning, mapping, installation, repair, and running of systems to provide water for optimum plant health with minimum waste
  • Preform snow and ice removal, including the use of snow shovels, ice breakers, snow blowers and salt spreaders on an emergency and non-emergency basis during weekdays and weekends.
  • Be available for events as requested from senior staff


  • A Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant discipline is preferred as well as further education in the field. At least four (4) years of practical horticultural experience, preferably in public and sustainably managed spaces; at least three (3) years of supervisory experience.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license; must be able to obtain and maintain a pesticide applicator’s license if needed.

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and writing)
  • Exhibit good judgment and decision-making skills
  • Ability to interact well with all levels of staff

Physical Requirements:

  • Be willing and able to work outdoors in all types of weather
  • Stand for long periods of time
  • Perform repetitive movements
  • Be able to lift/move 30 pounds
  • Use their hands/body to control, use, and feel objects, tools or control
