Start Date: March, 2020
Manhattan Garden Arts provides horticultural services and exterior plantings for prestigious buildings and clients in upper Manhattan. We are currently seeking experienced part-time urban gardeners to work as an integral member of a horticultural crew.
Most of the work is in planting annuals and tending to the gardens but occasional heavy physical labor is involved in the landscape installations of small trees and shrubs. Mainly, it is most important to be skilled with arranging and planting the small material and to be able to maintain a good planting pace. Must be able to lift a 40-lb bag of mulch. A neat appearance both for the garden and yourself is necessary.
Work involves changing out annual displays in tree pits and foundation beds, handling and planting shrubs and small trees, and general garden maintenance tasks. Experience in proper planting techniques, routine plant care, an aesthetic design sense, and a careful hand in pruning. Our days start at 6:45 and the first half hour is busy unloading plants and setting up so promptness is required, but the most important part of course is to enjoy the day and work well as a team member of a crew. We call the snowy and extremely rainy days but we would expect you to be able to work in the inevitable cold mornings of early spring and in the occasional showers that may pass by. Ability to tolerate inconsiderate dog-owners preferred but not required.
Experience in planting is preferred, but we are happy for you to learn, so shortage of experience is compensated by desire to learn.
