A Northern Westchester estate is seeking an experienced Organic Vegetable & Flower Gardener. The position is seasonal; full-time, with the potential for year round employment for a qualified, motivated self-starter. 

The estate’s gardens most relevant to the position include a formal vegetable garden, with additional beds of berries, a cut flower garden, a production-oriented vegetable garden, a propagation greenhouse, and a display greenhouse. The formal vegetable garden is 3000 ft.². The Vegetable Gardener will work alongside and learn from our estate gardeners to ensure the highest quality of horticulture and design across the garden.



 

Responsibilities/Duties

  • The daily care and maintenance of our propagation house, vegetable garden(s) and berry orchard; Growing and maintaining the gardens, with heavy focus on vegetable, herb and cut flower propagation, scheduling, and record keeping, including daily logging of completed work tasks & sowing/transplanting schedules.
  • Installing and managing crop rotations and successions.
  • Harvesting and processing vegetables, herbs and berries.
  • Communicating with the Head Gardener and house staff regarding weekly harvests and availability.
  • Monitoring, recognizing and reporting any signs of pest, disease or cultural problems to our Head Gardener, and following through with organic solutions & treatment; recordkeeping of treatments and applications.
  • Working in conjunction with other gardeners and landscape crew on large projects throughout the property from time to time, as needed.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Horticultura/Agricultural education or demonstrated professional gardening experience and a desire to further your horticultural knowledge.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and work efficiently; Can follow directions and complete assignments with attention to detail.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical work and a willingness to work in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Ability to properly use provided tools and equipment including shovels, rakes, digging forks, hand shears and loppers to complete necessary tasks.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and experience manipulating spreadsheets.
  • Ability to be flexible in a fast paced and dynamic environment where priorities shift due to variables like weather, scheduling and events.

Additional Information

Ideal candidates will have strong knowledge of vegetable/fruit production, knowledge of greenhouse propagation and management and the ability to implement and maintain seed sowing schedules and best practices regarding organic vegetable production.
