Start Date: October 2025 to June 30, 2026  Compensation: $40.80/per hour/35 hours per week

NYC Parks is the steward of over 30,000 acres of land — 14 percent of New York City — including more than 5,000 individual properties ranging from Coney Island Beach and Central Park to community gardens and Greenstreets. We look after 600,000 street trees, and two million more in parks. Environment and Planning division aims to protect, restore, and expand New York City Parks including green spaces and natural areas to maximize their benefits for environmental and community health and resilience. The Natural Resources Group’s mission is to protect, restore, expand, and manage New York City’s over 12,000 acres of natural spaces and green infrastructure across the five boroughs, including fores ts, grasslands, and wetlands. Employees who work for 6 months or longer are eligible for healthcare benefits. All seasonal employees earn sick and annual leave. All employees receive free membership to our recreation centers.

Responsibilities/Duties

  • Excellent leadership skills and capacity to reconcile input from multiple stakeholders.
  • 5 years of field experience in restoration or management of urban natural habitats, preferably in New York City. At least five years’ experience managing staff.
  • Broad understanding of native plant communities of Mid-Atlantic and New England regions.
  • Experience in all facets of landscape restoration activities including vegatation removal and plant establishment techniques.
  • Valid New York State driver License.
  • Full understanding of NYC ecology including native and invasive plants and current restoration science.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental, or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or'
  • A master’s degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biologica l, environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time experience in the appropriate field of specialization, including one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1” or “2” above. However, all candidates must have a master’s degree in an appropriate field of specialization and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative, or research capacity as described in “2” above.
  •  A degree with a specialization in hydrology, geomorphology, water resources engineering, ecological or biological engineering, natural resource management, environmental science, or a related field.
  • Experience in stormwater management and/or stream restoration design.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD.
  • Experience with HEC-RAS or HydroCAD.
  • Knowledge of wetland hydrology, ecological restoration, and stormwater best management practices.
  • Ability to work under adverse conditions (heat, early/late hours, inclement weather, muddy and/or wet conditions).
  • Excellent inter-personal skills, including the ability to work independently and part of a team.
  • Excellent leadership, analytic, communication, and writing skills.
  • Experience with GIS, spatial analysis, and statistical tools.
  • Valid New York State driver license.

Additional Information

Residency in New York City, Nassau, Orange, Rockland, Suffolk, Putnam or Westchester counties required for employees with over two years of city service. New York City residency required for all other candidates within 90 days of hire.
Fees: Hired candidates will be subject to a processing fee of $91.00. Hired candidates who are not currently employed by the City will be subject to a $101.25 background check fee.
